Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Bear in mind, from some people's point of view, not everyone who calls themselves a Christian is actually a Christian; even if they worship Jesus, it doesn't count if they don't do it the right way. Of course, most of the people who think that also consider Mormons to be false Christians, so trying to court them may not be the wisest move on Romney's part.

My mother is finally voting for Romney, despite having originally been in the "Mormonism is a cult!" camp. She thinks he stands with her on every issue. She thought that raising the estate tax would penalize her holdings. I had to tell her "You know the estate tax currently only taxes income over the first one million, right?"
My dad managed to get a stereotypical "I want my country back" rant in the editorials of my local newspaper, much to the consternation of my entire family - even the ones voting for Romney. What made it just perfect was that on the same page, there was a political cartoon stating that Romney's main supporters were angry white men.
The implication being that because Obama is Christian, he can't be waging a war against it? I dunno... That seems a lot like saying "Obama is black, therefore he can't be a racist."
I agree that he's not waging a war against Christians... But I don't think it has much to do with his personal faith...

It's possible I suppose that Obama could wage a war against Christianity, but he isn't. If anyone in this country is waging a war against anyone else in this country, it's the conservative Christians and the "real Americans" against the rest of us. Which is why I'm so not looking forward to the next 4 years.

That was hilarious.
But still I have to remind you about double-posting.
There's another nitpick, but this time it's not your fault: the system can't handle links with commas. It would help if you could use a URL shortener to fix the link. If you see a link with a comma in it, you'll notice that our forum software adds a space after it. The link will work if you open the page and remove the spaces, but it's easier if the link is taken to a URL shortener in the first place. Same with long URLs, which also get spaces added into them, as is the case with this link.

Quod gratis asseritur, gratis negatur.@Thorn: I have no clue.
And the phrase "religious freedom" really needs to burn in a fire. When you have unsupported, unfalsifiable claims that are not only accepted readily as being perfectly ok by even most secularists, and these beliefs manage to shape public policy, I don't know where you get off claiming that you're undergoing some kind of struggle.
the link doesn't work for me, but found the article...Comments are good.
"And what if Christie disobeys? Will Murdoch hack into his phone?
Not just that — on his next appearance on Fox, Christie will be branded with the “scarlet letter”: (D) "
Btw whats the "Thanks Bloomberg right decision"? Did he not endorse Obama?
