Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

As ![]()
and
said, the Democrats would be the rational conservative party. They're pretty much center-right in most nations with Obama himself being outright rightwing.
What we really need is a rational left party that's electable so the center works out to be an actual center as compared to the rest of the world.
edit: Basically if the Greens represented the Libertarian Socialism aspect while the Democrats represented the Authoritarian Capitalist aspect we'd be much better off IMO. More than two main parties would be even better but I doubt that will ever happen.

Jewish Republicans Seeking Votes for Romney in U.S. and Israel

I know. That's why I vote Democratic. They aren't ideal (I'm more of a Green myself) but I know they have no chance of getting elected and even if they did they wouldn't be able to do much unless people were more open to some of their ideas.
My thinking is that the Greens would get their big boost by having some of the more liberal Democrats endorsing them and switching to their side. While this is happening some of the less insane Republicans like Governor Christie would likely join the Democrats. I know it would take a while for the Greens to get a lot of power and momentum but as long as they win some seats and start giving people an idea of what their policies could do we'll be much better off IMO. Many independents would happily vote for them since they hate the main two and want a third option that's not corrupt. The Greens would give them that.
Not him solely but you're right. The Red Scare, while valid at first, did a lot of damage to this nation.

I'd assign some blame to William Buckley jr., Barry Goldwater, Ronald Reagan, Ayn Rand, Roy Cohn, Robert Taft, Larry Mc Donald, The John Birch Society, the Western Goals Foundation, Religious Fundamentalism in politics, Southernization, and The Soviet Union (and Communism in general).
The list is rather long.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016Huffington Post: Republicans are more likely to believe in demonic possession than climate change
.
I think I'm failing to understand how a country can successfully operate over a period of time when both capitalist and socialist political parties are viable contenders.
I've already been worrisome over the past few months about signing up for Obama health care because I didn't want to get it shortly before Romney could win the election and immediately repeal it, leaving me with a health care plan that charges me heavily and refuses to cover me for certain things.
That's gotta be nothing compared to anyone who can completely change the way the country's economy works every time the other party receives power. I'm not so much confused by socialism as the idea of a country repeatedly switching to and from it.
(Imagine if US presidents were to routinely abolish the previous one's constitutional amendments. On things more significant than alcohol.)
You're looking at it wrong, I think. What we're doing is tugging at the reigns of industry, aka Keynesian economics. And whenever the Republicans take power, they remove the saddle and let private corporations run amok.
We've reached a point where people (and I'm including people on this very forum) believe that periodic financial crashes are natural and expected, when it's a symptom of allowing too much free reign by profit-seekers.

I'm a skeptical squirrel

In a lot of other places a rational Conservative Party would be the Democrats — or the Republicans of Ronald Reagan's day.
