The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

hell. even local factories go so far as to hire through a hiring agency so you can be let go without having ever been officially on their payroll.

Oh gosh yes, this is one of the weirdest things ever. My dad "worked" for a company based several states away, while actually working for a local company, because the local company outsourced the hiring and HR to the out-of-state company.

Yep. Its how some of the local factories do it. That way they can let you go when theyre done with seasonal work so they dont have to actually pay you the pay they give their own weorkers during the months where theyre essentially laid off.

Well, this essay:

http://www.thebaffler.com/past/the_long_con/

http://krugman.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/11/02/karl-roves-mission-accomplished/

Notes that what you posted about Romney isn't really all that new per say to the Republican Party's machines and talking heads and major magazines. Since roughly the 70s, the Republican Party's money raisers have pretty much allied themselves with financing through Pyramid Schemes and Ponzi Scheme fundraising methods.

(Which does explain much about the moral dishonesty with the current Republican pundit stock)

Another storm scheduled for six days. People in lower Manhattan (nevermind the Bronx) still have no heat or water. How are they going to care about some election when their families are hungry and freezing?

KO blow for the east coast. Helloooo, Romney Presidency.

Johnny: RECALL, we have the electoral college. Unless those blue states magically vote not-blue, it doesn't matter if they're KO'd.

It could definitely cause Obama to lose the popular vote though.

I'm pretty sure that if the weather stops Democrats from voting in the Northeast, it'll also stop enough of the Republicans that it'll still be an Obama victory in the Left-leaning states. And even if the storm manages to only affect Democrats, without knowing the exact figures of the ratio between Democrats and Republicans there, I imagine that the early votes from Democrats by now would be enough to secure at least some of the states even if the storm somehow targets Democrats only on voting day.

Yeah, I don't see this next storm mattering much, except that it'll make an already-miserable segment of the country even more miserable.

Don't we have provisions to delay elections in cases of emergencies like this? Because it seems like the kind of thing we should have.

Course, this just also highlights the importance of having multiple voting days as well as early voting.

I don't think we do have said provisions. Which is a crying shame.

Good luck getting that through congress.

And noone will dare suggest postponing the elections in those areas because whichever side suggests it will be accused by the other trying to steal the election.

[up][up][up][up]... Election postponement/rescheduling is done at a state level. Usually by the Governor or other state official...

There are provisions in the federal law(the one that requires federal elections for President/Congress be done on the first Tuesday following the first Monday in November) that allow for states to reschedule the day for those ballots to be cast, so long as the result is submitted by December 10th(when the Electoral College meets)... But such rescheduling has never happened before.

New York delaying/rescheduling could be important because NYC is the primary reason why the state goes blue every year, as NYC holds half of the state's population...

Really, unless it's a swing state that's afflicted with the damage, it is probably not going to have an impact. This type of situation where people have trouble getting their votes in through no fault of their own is exactly the kind of situation the Electoral College is designed to circumvent.

No it's not -_-;

It's an unintended benefit of the electoral college, not a deliberate reason it was created that way. The reason the electoral college was created the way it was was because of a states rights argument-coupled with a fear of populism.

...was that meant for the Gunnerkrigg thread?

I hope Bloomberg's support of Obama and Christie's cooperation is indicative that, if Obama wins (which 538 gives 80% odds of now?), at least the state Republicans might be more cooperative.

Republicans in the N.E. always seem to be the good kind. The only Republican elsewhere outside of the N.E. that actually has any resemblance to moderation is Richard Burr, who voted for the repeal of DADT. He's still conservative, though, just he is willing to vote for what's right sometimes.

That may have to do with anti-northern sentiment.

NJ is lumped with NY as a haven of commies and darkies and jews, of vice and smut (even though it's been homogenized for well over two decades now). So what incentive do northern republicans have to kowtow to those guys?

it may also simply have to do with the culture. The strain of absolutelly poisonous southern fried conservativism doesnt play as wlel in a part of the country with far more cities and a functional transportation system.
