The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I do find it hilarious how the Republican party constantly wonders why black people or mexeicans (like meee) dont often vote republican while they roll out new ways to condescend to us or discriminate against us.

Share it so that people can get into this conversation, 'cause we're not the only ones who think like this.

I thought the republicans had a pretty high turn-out with mexicans? I'm going to have to go dig through the stats again aren't I?

Is using "Julian Assange is a Hillary butt plug" an acceptable signature quote?

I don't think so.

They have a high turn out rate with Cubans though, mainly due to JFK's failed Bay of Pigs Invasion.

The idea that Hispanics are all one big homogenous voting block really has got to go.

@Thatguy: pretty much every hispanic country is different. Cubans like republicans. Mexicans on the other hand, despise being treated like criminals and illegal immigrants even if theyre legally here.

Judging by the Romney .gifs (like kittens on his head while holding a fat stack of cash saying "VOTE ME PLEEEEEEASE", and another one where he's wearing a rainbow tie and twerking his nipples), she's being satirical or despises both of them.

Upon a closer look, I don't fucking wut. Seems like she'd be fun to get high with though.

I'm going with despises both of them (or at least despises Obama and dislikes Romney) but will probably vote Republican due to seeing them as the lesser of two evils.

I'm also gonna guess the author is a Libertarian.

I'm going with complete nut because yes Obama DID FUCKING RESPOND TO THE TEXAS WILDFIRES. And you know what Perry did before we had those? Turn down thousands to millions in aid money that could be used for any sort of disaster, then get fucking pissy about it when the fires happened and we had no money at hand to take care of it.

Also she has the New World Order thing as her background, so I don't think that person is the most reality orientated person in existence.

Bloomberg just endorsed Obama because of Sandy and climate change. Sorta strange and probably won't make a difference cause NY is safely in Obama's column.

No surprise. Obama foreign policy stance (moderate realist) fits with Powell better than the guys who would surround a Romney White House (neocons and Bush carry overs).

Romney ad links Obama to various latin america dictators.

Also, GOP candidate opposes abortion in all cases except "the rape thing".

I'd say more interesting than the Bloomberg nod is libertarian magazine The Economist has thrown its support behind Obama citing the reason why being that they feel Obama is a bad president who isnt a friend of the business world, but at least he understands macroeconomics and doesnt want to bomb iran or support israel unconditionally.

coming from a very pro- business magazine, thats pretty much a glowing review when they say "You stand against everything we believe in..but the other guy will absolutely destroy the economy oh god please dont let him win"

or to quote them directly.

"As a result, this election offers American voters an unedifying choice. Many of The Economist’s readers, especially those who run businesses in America, may well conclude that nothing could be worse than another four years of Mr Obama. We beg to differ. For all his businesslike intentions, Mr Romney has an economic plan that works only if you don’t believe most of what he says. That is not a convincing pitch for a chief executive. And for all his shortcomings, Mr Obama has dragged America’s economy back from the brink of disaster, and has made a decent fist of foreign policy. So this newspaper would stick with the devil it knows, and re-elect him."

Hmmmmm: I'm not totally convinced even this backhanded compliment (under duress) is enough to wake the GOP up to the fact they need to quit with the "local businessman" angle as a hook for their candidates. tongue

The message needs to be a lot clearer. Preferably with pictures and big type.

But, if you gradually lose your financial base by trying to pander to voters instead of educating them... <shrugs> You're soon going to whack into a dead end.

You can't rely on big business to keep handing you campaign money if they start to look sideways at what you might do with it, in short. Tax breaks will only get you so far before the problems mount to the point that the wheels fall off. tongue

well,. yes. But thats kind of what business relies on a lot. Many corporations are so beholden to their shareholders they utterly prioritize short term gain over long term.
