The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Rush, dear Rush. When was the last time you ran a state? How much of your personal fortune are you donating to the relief effort? How much sweat off of your own fat ass is going into this?

Wow, I looked at the comments of a conservative site about this and they are calling Christie "RINO" and other things.

I guess helping out your state during crisis is less important than towing the party line.

Pretty much. Conservative pundits don't really seem to care about people so much as winning the political Super Bowl.

And even a lot of conservative commenters seem to be horrified by such statements.

If I was a liberal website or some way associated with the Obama campaign I'd be showing this off big time.

Well, I know Politico and Thinkprogress both have articles about it. Because it is kind of horrifying to see how actually being a compassionate human being and an effective governor in a crisis has made Christie persona non grata

No no, you can be compassionate.

You just can't fraternize with The Enemy

Also according to Detroit News (Which is Right leaning so I'm not fully convinced) Obama might actually lose Michigan somehow.

You know, this utter failure of compassion among GOP flag-bearers might just tip the election in Obama's favor.

Doubt it.

Republicans never once ran this election on their own merits, just against Obama's.

I mean Sandy did hit mostly blue states, right? So maybe the pundits don't want those areas to be helped.

...Wow that's really conspiracy-theory-ish.

Perhaps the propaganda has been absorbed and now Conservatives think we ought to let the weak and vulnerable fend for themselves.

"Because it's their fault for living in a flood zone and expecting taxpayer dollars to fix it?" That sentiment has been heard and it really exposes the hardcore Randian philosophy being utilized.

It's fucking Manhattan! It's the Jersey Shore! If they can protest relief here, they'll protest it anywhere.

Yeah, I've heard that sentiment expressed before too, and it rings more and more hollow with it becoming more and more clear that there's aren't many completely 'safe' place to live in today's environment.

If it's not hurricanes or flooding, it's tornadoes. If it's not tornadoes, it's flash fires. If it's not flash fires, it's earthquakes, even....

Furthermore, I think Guantanamo must be destroyed.

Or an earthquake zone. Or an area prone to droughts, or blizzards or sandstorms. There is no area that is not prone to some reoccurring natural disaster or another.

exactly. Sure, here in missouri flood zones dont exist unless you live right on the river. (which has its advantages anyhie because shipping lanes)

But we also live right in the middle of F5 Tornado land that flattens cities like Joplin.

I have heard that the US is particularly prone to natural disasters, and that's why this part of the world has always been pretty sparsely populated. Is this true?

That seems a bit ridiculous. North and South America are geographically isolated from Asia, Africa, and Europe and so migrations were very limited in scope. I've read that most native populations can trace their ancestry to Asians migrating across the Alaskan land bridge. Certainly, the European settlers had no trouble colonizing the place once it was possible to get here via ocean travel.

It is true that we get most of the world's tornados, or so I heard, but Asia is no stranger to typhoons and earthquakes and droughts happen everywhere.

I've heard St George,Utah is supposed to be pretty safe,....then again it's in Utah

Back on topic, imagine what would happen if a Democratic candidate acted like Romney in Tornado Alley,my gosh look at what both sides would do to that person.

I meant mostly as compared to Central and South America. Also possibly the way that Quebec and Paris are close in longitude but very different in climate...

That has more to do with the currents, likewise this is why San Francisco is so cold in the summer in contrast to,Richmond,VA,Athens,Napoli, and cities on the other side of the Pacific.

Now seriously lets not derail this into population and climate stuff, this the elections thank you very much.

Humans are ingenious and tenacious critters. And just because Europe was where "modern" society developed doesn't mean it was necessarily an historical inevitability. "Natives" lived in the Americas - North and South - for thousands of years prior to the arrival of the settlers; they evidently managed somehow.

Just watched this video about GOP attempts at voter suppression.

It's absolutely chilling. My sister is studying oversees, and she had to work to get her absentee ballot, when they should have just sent it to her. Don't know if it's related, but it might be. If any of you see this happening, like spreading misinformation on a billboard, or you hear about it from anyone, please do something. Contact your state's election board.
