Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

- Obama/Democrats/liberals are out to destroy the country and its moral fiber and its values and everything, so even a greedy bastard like Romney is better than someone who's actively malicious.
- Besides, are you sure those aren't false accusations created by the liberal media to help keep Obama in office?
I can kinda believe that people would like George H.W. Bush. At least, more than I could believe anyone can really even stand Romney. I guess that's just my ever-lowering standards for Republicans at work.
If enough time were to pass by, we could have a Republican president that devours the corpses of children on live TV and all I'd be able to say is "I guess Karl Rove seems like a decent guy now."
I could never think in those terms. You have your usual opportunists who are only interested in being party boss, like Rove.
But unlike most party bosses in history, Rove is single-minded in his pursuit to stamp out democracy. He's Aristotle, dreaming of grooming the next Alexander. If we ever end up with a baby eating madman in office, it'll be people like Rove who paved the road.

I'm a skeptical squirrelExcept he's actually significantly more pro-gun control than Obama.
Considering what happened on this very thread some five or six pages back, I think everyone needs to remember that this mindset is not in any way limited to Republicans.

Untitled Power Rangers StoryThey're people going further and further to defend an illusion about what the world is like. An illusion that is growing increasingly farther from reality.
The world of naturally plentiful resources and opportunities and where hard work, a bit of savviness, and some technology can solve all our problems, is gradually disappearing. We live in a world where we have decreasing control of our own individual fates, socially, economically, and environmentally; as a result, getting along and working together is increasingly important, but some people are desperately trying to hang onto the hope that the world isn't coming to this.
Once again, that doesn't matter. When your side does things that seem contradictory, it's always for the best, and it's just something they have to do at the moment. The other side is always out to get you, no exceptions. Anything nice they seem to do is either (1) a head-fake or (2) them being beaten into submission by you and your allies. If left unchecked, the other side can and will destroy your world and everything you hold dear. They will be teaching perverse sexuality to your children, taking away your right to buy larger cars, and forcing you sit by while unborn babies die. They will destroy your country's legal basis and cultural traditions. They will force you to pay everything except your firstborn children in taxes.

He constantly says shit the only entitled rich white bastards can agree with.
Untitled Power Rangers StoryRomney is also more a flip flop than even fucking Kerrey. He'll take whatever position is LITERALLY convenient for that exact moment, and switch when it becomes inconvenient. He's a hack of the highest caliber.
That and the fact that pretty much all his real positions amount of "shrink government, fuck the poor, baby and coddle the rich, and Social fucking Darwinism for anyone who isn't a rich old white guy."
Why there is a backlash against Romney:
- He has built his entire campaign on lies.
- He has no fixed positions on anything except for a few key issues, such as gay rights and austerity.
- He is a political opportunist that has used anything he can to increase his power, such as the deaths in Benghazi, even when the people involved doesn't want him to.
- He is and has a history of being a bully.
- He is an entitled white rich person.
- He is probably going to promote regressive taxation.
- He is completely against gay rights.
Did I miss anything?
Rep. Steve King (R-IA-04) on disaster relief Gucci bags
:
"But not one big shot to just open up the checkbook, because they spent it on Gucci bags and massage parlors and everything you can think of in addition to what was necessary," he said later, referring to Hurricane Katrina.
...
Anyway, his opponent is Christie Vilsack, a literacy advocate and former first lady of Iowa (wife of former governor Tom Vilsack).

I'm not going to do anything. I don't think the world will end with a Romney presidency. I'll just spend the next four years promoting the people I want to win in the next election, which I will do with an Obama presidency. In fact, I won't do much differently if Romney wins than if Obama wins.
