The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

All right.

Yeah I remember a similar thing being in the Talmud and honestly if it's not addressed in the Tanakh and it doesn't really seem like something Jesus would have discussed, so... what's up with that?

@Serocco: point me to actual evidence for that, please? Notice that it is not, actually, a factor in the Trayvon Martin case; Zimmerman claims Martin attacked him, and there was no opportunity to escape.

Morven: Florida is a state where Stand Your Ground is in place. A large part of why Zimmerman even has a case is because he's claiming self-defense, which is what Stand Your Grand allows, though I think the bill allows justifiable homicides.

But the land battle is just one factor in Mr. Kerrey’s comeback. Over the past several months, he’s attempted to move to the right of Mrs. Fischer on entitlement reform and federal spending while convince Nebraskans that he’s better equipped to tackle the nation’s budget deficits and mounting debt.

That approach, apparently having an impact with Nebraska voters, has also helped Mr. Kerrey secure support from across the aisle. On Monday, former Republican Sen. Alan Simpson of neighboring Wyoming, co-chairman of the Bowles-Simpson deficit reduction commission, endorsed Mr. Kerrey.

“He has told Nebraskans the honest truth about the critical necessity of assuring the 75-year solvency of the Social Security system, and stabilizing Medicare and Medicaid in a way that preserves and strengthens the needed protections for seniors,” Mr. Simpson said in a statement. Mr. Kerrey “will place the national interest ahead of the howling special interests and be ready to make the hard, tough choices.”

This is the kind of Democrat that wins in Nebraska I guess.

Share it so that people can get into this conversation, 'cause we're not the only ones who think like this.

RE the hurricane and politics, I hate to focus on this, since I realize it shows a lack of concern for people there, but the states affected are solid blue states, and I worry about how that will affect Obama's chances at re-election since so many people are going to be unable to vote (I also have sort of an assumption that the wealthier, Republican residents aren't going to be as inconvenienced).

Not an issue. They have until November 7th to vote, by then most of the destruction that Sandy has caused will be cleaned up.

The only effect it might have is in Virginia.

Voting issues aside, I hope that things are settled down by then. I can't imagine how awful it must be for people there and all the destruction the hurricane is causing.

This thread will be closing on November 8, after a year and half of pretty interesting conversation. We should throw it a going away party.

Isn't Jeb Bush the guy who signed the very first Stand Your Ground bill into law as Govenor of Florida?

Yes, and I am ok with that.

No one tell Grizzly, it would just depress him.

I've been depressed ever since Romney got the nomination. It's more of a case of them not pushing me quite enough to make me jump ship. If they don't get a better candidate together next time I will.

Yes, isn't the whole thing that life begins at conception a part of the catechism rather than a part of the actual bible? You know, that part that Protestants don't believe in?

For me it isn't a matter of religion but of basic morality.

I'd recommend a Longest Lurker award, but I think that'd be a bit hard to define.

One of these days I shall reread the entire thread. I'll be done before the 2014 thread comes to an end.

@ Eddie: If something important happens (such as a recall), we may need to keep this thread open or have a general American politics thread as a just in case thing.

I think we should just make a general American Politics thread after this closes to match the British Politics and Canadian Politics threads.

[up] The majority of people are fine with self defence laws. To many, Stand Your Ground is just another one of those.

Enh, just start up one related to American politics general,...I do disagree with closing it so early, just in case it really does end up being an exact draw electorally,or Romney plays Gore to Obama's Bush. We should leave it open a little longer,I'd say until the inauguration of Romney or return of Obama.

The thread should probably be kept open until Inauguration. I mean, the odds that the results will be definite by November 7th are slim, at best.

@Serrocco: There are cases in which homicide is justifiable. We call that self defense. Your location shouldn't matter when you're defending yourself or others. The whole Trayvon Martin case was not self defense, though, and pretty much has proven to be a completely unfunny joke about our legal system.

Killing someone out of self-defense is never a good reason. You could easily say that our drone strikes are out of "self-defense" (which they're not). Same principle.

The defender has the obligation to not escalate the level of violence. The defender has no obligation to die in place of the assailant, but that's about as far as I'm willing to go in regards to justifying lethal self-defense. I think that a duty to retreat is generally a good idea.
