Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Bob Kerrey is starting to make up for lost ground in the Nebraska Senate race
Morven: Florida is a state where Stand Your Ground is in place. A large part of why Zimmerman even has a case is because he's claiming self-defense, which is what Stand Your Grand allows, though I think the bill allows justifiable homicides.

In RWBY, every girl is Best Girl. That approach, apparently having an impact with Nebraska voters, has also helped Mr. Kerrey secure support from across the aisle. On Monday, former Republican Sen. Alan Simpson of neighboring Wyoming, co-chairman of the Bowles-Simpson deficit reduction commission, endorsed Mr. Kerrey.
“He has told Nebraskans the honest truth about the critical necessity of assuring the 75-year solvency of the Social Security system, and stabilizing Medicare and Medicaid in a way that preserves and strengthens the needed protections for seniors,” Mr. Simpson said in a statement. Mr. Kerrey “will place the national interest ahead of the howling special interests and be ready to make the hard, tough choices.”
RE the hurricane and politics, I hate to focus on this, since I realize it shows a lack of concern for people there, but the states affected are solid blue states, and I worry about how that will affect Obama's chances at re-election since so many people are going to be unable to vote (I also have sort of an assumption that the wealthier, Republican residents aren't going to be as inconvenienced).
HodorYes, and I am ok with that.
I've been depressed ever since Romney got the nomination. It's more of a case of them not pushing me quite enough to make me jump ship. If they don't get a better candidate together next time I will.
For me it isn't a matter of religion but of basic morality.
<><If something like that happens, the thread can always be reopened. It's not going to be deleted outright.
Writing a post-post apocalypse LitRPG on RR. Also fanfic stuff.Enh, just start up one related to American politics general,...I do disagree with closing it so early, just in case it really does end up being an exact draw electorally,or Romney plays Gore to Obama's Bush. We should leave it open a little longer,I'd say until the inauguration of Romney or return of Obama.
@Serrocco: There are cases in which homicide is justifiable. We call that self defense. Your location shouldn't matter when you're defending yourself or others. The whole Trayvon Martin case was not self defense, though, and pretty much has proven to be a completely unfunny joke about our legal system.

Ok.
Hypothetical situation: I have you trapped and I'm going in for the kill. You have a gun.
What do you do?
"The defender has the obligation to not escalate the level of violence"
No he/she doesn't.
And who is this obligation to?

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016

All right.
Yeah I remember a similar thing being in the Talmud and honestly if it's not addressed in the Tanakh and it doesn't really seem like something Jesus would have discussed, so... what's up with that?
