Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

That has been our fundamental problem for years, decades even.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Centuries.
Also, FYI, I check Right-wing news sources to see how bullsbhit they're spinning. However, you're ALSO drinking fucking kool-aid if you think the Far-Left doesn't do their own propaganda shit. There is far less of it, I will grant that, simply for the fact the GOP's went ass-over teakettle into the Conspiracy hole. But don't act like nutbar kooks on the left doesn't exist, like that female anti-gun protester who pointed a loaded AK-47 at her audience.
Stupid and/or ignorant people in general are a problem. The grand majority of them worldwide currently are right-wing, but they don't have a monopoly on it. Course, I might also just feel this way due to the fact I live in one of the largest concentrations of stupid, ignorant and/or lazy Leftists on the planet, the lower mainland of BC. They'll talk for years about how important stuff is, but they'll never actually DO anything about it. BC has the worst Mental Health department in Canada. When the province that keeps trying to separate has a better track record than you, you have a problem.
That, and the Lower Mainland is also the most racially segregated and racist place in Canada, which is why I've nicknamed it "Canada's Johannesburg."

Semper Fi. Semper Paratus. Vigilo Confido.Someone has to read the senate rules and interpret them, it makes sense for that person to be a non-partisan professional.
The senate can change its rules if it so desires, but the idea is that until it does so it needs to stick to them.
That’s not a breach of the senate rules. Hell, the senate rules don’t even mention the filibuster (as it is simply an absence of rules). Plus the majority leader can (I think) force a filibuster to be followed through on if they so desire, they just chose not to.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranIf all else fails, tell them Krispy Kreme is giving free donuts to everyone who gets vaccinated (not a joke, this is a real thing and I cynically expect it to see actual success in getting people vaccinated where science fails)
Thank god, we may have hope after all
Centuries.
I wouldn't go that far, we did have a productive consensus in the past. It just so happened to be built on the backs of subjugated black people.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangThe irony is really that the US became what it was founded to break away from.
At least for roughly the past century or so.
Semper Fi. Semper Paratus. Vigilo Confido.A hereditary monarchy? No, not really.
About half of the original Patriots wanted to break away because they resented the long-distance rule of the British monarchy and wanted to govern themselves, while the other half wanted to break away because they heard that Britain was going to abolish slavery and they didn't want any part of that.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Rich people not wanting to pay taxes is literally enshrined in the founding mythos of this country. It's no surprise, then, that we're still having trouble getting them to pay their fair share.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.I meant an empire that controls trade and sticks its nose in everyone else's business.
Not so much the Monarchy part.
And rich people trying to avoid taxes has pretty much existed since the concepts of wealth and taxes first existed.
Semper Fi. Semper Paratus. Vigilo Confido.
This is a rather reductive and ahistoric view of the American Revolution, obviously Patriot leaders were motivated by class-interest but ignoring any kind of principle is a lazy analysis. Demonization is just as flawed and blind as hero worship.
Agreed. Values Dissonance and all that.

You know, curiously, and there's probably a better thread for this, but it's interesting to think what North America's landscape territory wise would've looked like if The American Revolution never happened.
The Louisiana territory'd possibly have become a primarily francophone country in the US's place, Mexico would probably be expanded up a lot of the west coast, hell, Russia might've expanded south from Alaska too.
Interesting to think about.

Semper Fi. Semper Paratus. Vigilo Confido. The Framers were by no means perfect, but they did fight legitimate unjustices.
For example, with the tax situation, it's worth noting that it isn't just that the taxes that were the problem. The problem was that the British Empire was unilaterally taxing American colonies while also making exemptions for megacorporations that the crown owned stock in.
Leviticus 19:34Well, my point is more the same thing is happening nowadays among American Politicians and Megacorps.
The players've changed, but it's still basically the same schtick.
Time goes on, but history repeats itself.
Semper Fi. Semper Paratus. Vigilo Confido.Sure, and now their slogan is, "Preserving the wealth of job creators trickles down into the economy." The reality is that Americans have never wanted to pay taxes. That used to be England's problem. Now it's ours.
That doesn't mean the U.K. didn't have its share of problems. But it's worth keeping in mind that rich people refusing to pay taxes has been the status quo of this country for its entire existence. We didn't even want to pay the soldiers who fought in the revolution!
The privileged rich ravenously devouring the poor and disenfranchised while flipping off the government is what this country is at its heart of hearts, and we've been fighting an uphill battle to change that for centuries.

So basically, the position is completely useless because half the Senate is committed to breaking the rules and arguing in bad faith.
Edit: Of course this becomes a page-topper...
