Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Maybe he honestly believes that dicking around like FEMA did with Katrina is the appropriate response to a hurricane. You could give him points for consistency.
Share it so that people can get into this conversation, 'cause we're not the only ones who think like this.Do you know what would possibly be the worst thing for Chris Christie's political career, right now? Romney becoming president. That would mean that, in 2016, Romney would be the Republican nominee for president, and Christie would have to wait four more years before he tried to become president himself.
It's pretty bad when you have someone saying that the president, regardless of who he is, is responding TOO FAST to a natural disaster that has at least hundreds out of their homes. Shit, these clean up and rescue missions don't organize themselves, you moron. At least Christie appears to be focusing on actually helping people this time.
Anyway, this appears to have delayed both candidate's campaigning they had planned for the week. Think this is going to have any effect? I haven't heard anything from Romney just yet, but Obama obviously is doing work since he's the guy in charge anyway.
Obama has a chance to "look Presidential", whatever that means, but especially in contrast to Bush and Katrina. Then again, a disaster triggers resentment against government regardless of who is in charge or if it was preventable, and thousands of voters could be unable to get to the polls next week. Then again again, Romney's stance on defunding FEMA could well bite him in the ass in a knee jerk reflex manner.
Overall this seems likely to have a neutral effect unless Obama botches something badly (or is filmed on national TV rescuing babies or something).
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"You're thinking Cory Booker. Seriously, just because they're both black, you think they look the same? That's RACIST!

Well, he is generally seen as the fun kind of crazy, so it's not necessarily a problem.
Writing a post-post apocalypse LitRPG on RR. Also fanfic stuff.I would vote for Biden.
And Obama jumping out of helicopters saving babies XD
But in all seriousness, this is his chance to stop dicking around, and show the American people that he is doing his job while dealing with the Race next week.
Obama is getting my first vote of my life, so here here.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jXkI1sTDoEgThe way I see it is that if FEMA does get its job done, and power and services and aid is handled in an appropriate manner for the next week, Obama can argue "We did what we had to do, and this is why government is good". Which I can see having the potential of undoing, or creating a massive crack, in the Gingrich Revolution of '94, and essentially killing "BIG GOBUMENT EBILZ".
That and if Obama does get re-elected, he can use it to argue "This is why we need a Jobs Bill and why we need to massively update our infrastructure."
I hate to politicize a disaster, but Sandy has the ability to do a lot of damage to the Republican brand.
@Fighteer You seem to be forgetting one of Romney's infamous moves when backed into a corner,...denial.
If Obama tries that on him,he will deny ever taking such a stance on FEMA,Fox will back him up,and that will do it.
Katrina should've done that,it seemed to do this in 2006 and 2008,all that happened was the neo-cons fell wayside to regressionists, and it'll happen again. Maybe it'll be the neo-cons again, maybe it'll be the libertarians, but another branch will take over.
Instead the Vocal Minority of said branch will make Obama/(next pres. if 2016 goes to the Dems) go back to his/her (if the Dem candidate is a woman) shell. They will dive everything farther to the right and only gridlock will happen at best. Come to 2014 or 2018,we'll get the same bullshit in 2010 from this wing and they will win.
No it doesn't bode well for the Dems at all.

It's code for "We don't like the fact that you trying to organize a quick and efficient response is going to make you look really damn good, and that you'll be able to use this to argue for a Second Great Society."
