The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I just learned that Justice Kennedy has no relation to the Kennedy family.

And that Governor Cuomo and Arnold Schwarzenegger do.

I'm convinced that this is the best campaign ad ever.

Why can't candidates make ads like this nowadays?

Trump has kindly extended his $5 mil offer in light of the hurricane. Obama may exploit this tragedy to flood the states with dirty government money, but don't be fooled!

Obama should take the offer and give the money to FEMA. You know, for free.

[up] That would certainly help FEMA, but is it worth giving in to Trumps' "I-want-attention" crisis?

I'm tempted to say Obama should refuse just to spite Trumps, but that money couls help a lot of people...

It's a tradeoff between exploiting one man's ego for free cash and appearing 'weak' to give in to conspiracy theorist demands as president of the United States. Since he's in campaign mode, Obama is likely more concerned with the latter than the former.

Furthermore, I think Guantanamo must be destroyed.

Uhh..That's certainly one way of looking at it. Another is that Donald Trump knows this, could just have easily handed a check to the Red Cross, but is only interested in scoring points for the GOP and his celebrity image.

NJ Gov. Christie praises Obama for helping him out with starting up disaster relief.

Watch out its got a video if you don't like that sort of thing.

This is why people like Christie. He may act like a football coach but at least he's a rational being. The words "federal disaster relief is immoral" would never pass through his lips, for example.

in before "chris christie isn't a real conservatuive"

Good to know that Obama's and christie both are already coordinating like mad to get relief efforts going. From what I've been hearing New Jersey got absolutely demolished.

So its rather heartening to see a big name conservative willing to utterly ignore partisanship in favor of getting relief to his constituents in their time of need. And to know Obama was willing to call Christie all night (I believe the weather channel said christie and obama talks a whole 12 times overnight) on coordinating aid efforts asap.

He's trying to score political points in the cheapest way possible.

One thing he’s gonna be asked is, why did he jump on [the hurricane] so quickly and go back to D.C. so quickly when in…Benghazi, he went to Las Vegas?” Brown says. “Why was this so quick?… At some point, somebody’s going to ask that question…. This is like the inverse of Benghazi.

Yeah, you can go fuck yourself, buddy.

Furthermore, I think Guantanamo must be destroyed.
