The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I now have the strangest compulsion to photoshop a picture of Barack Obama onto Poseidon.

I wonder who Romney would be.

@Figures from quite a few pages ago because I forgot to refresh

That might be fluent. If you switch it to broken English I've seen figures saying there are nearly as many English speakers in China as the US.

So wait, Obama has a weather machine now that he's using to create Hurricane Sandy? HE'S NOT A SUPERVILLAIN!!!

Why does the antichrist need a weather machine again? Shouldn't he just be able to wave his arms and make a hurricane?

Has someone claimed Obama is actually responsible? That makes no sense; incumbents normally lose points in the short term for natural disasters.

You know this brings up an interesting point. Who do conspiracy theorists vote for? I don't mean casual theorists with one or two silly beliefs. I mean the-moon-landing-was-faked-by-nazi-aliens nuts?

Is using "Julian Assange is a Hillary butt plug" an acceptable signature quote?

Probably no one since the Illuminati is secretly manipulating every candidate in some form.

There are more nonnative speakers of English in China than in North America and Europe combined. Worldwide, second-language and forerign-language speakers of English outnumber native speakers by over three to one.

Back on topic, I can't help but think that Obama's response to Hurricane Sandy will determine the election.

Share it so that people can get into this conversation, 'cause we're not the only ones who think like this.

Well I hope he does a good job. He seems to have preemptively declared numerous states of emergencies so that's good I guess.

There's rumblings Romney will be doing some kind of press around the storm. Will likely be heckled about wanting to defund FEMA if that's true....

I hope Obama doesn't blast him too hard about trying to defund FEMA. It could easily backfire.

I wouldn't mind if he makes one or two passive aggressive comments about how important FEMA is, and he's glad they have the budget to do such and such.

I think it's worth mentioning I just don't think he should choke the airwaves with this sort of stuff. Very few people are undecided and those that aren't could be turned off if he gets too aggressive.

On the flip side, if he's too passive, he won't be able to show just how much of a dick Romney is. I'm not sure what the political calculus looks like TBH.

So I just got back from a speech/rally/thing with Gary Johnson in support of Amendment 64 here in Colorado which will legalize and regulate marijuana in the state. It was cool. He talked about the issue of the War on Drugs, for awhile, but, eventually, he made a big speech in support of his campaign, then a long question and answer session. I was the last person to ask a question. I asked him what I could practically do, as a voter, to help support third parties and help tear down our current two party system. His response was to vote for third party candidates and raise awareness among your friends, family, and neighbors. I also managed to shake his hand (twice, in fact), introduce myself, and have a short chat with him. It was very cool.

[up][up] Not only did I shake his hand (twice!) but I had a short chat with him, in which I expressed my political ambitions to him, and I asked a question that many people told me was great, and I actually introduced myself to him. *Smug face.*
