Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Here's a Wikipedia article
that might help.
I'm fairly sure that Finland should be in the same category as Sweden. The same goes for Norway; in the map they have in that article, Norway isn't coloured at all, so they're probably using a survey of EU countries. Norway's public education system is about equal to that of Finland, Denmark, Iceland and Sweden, and the average teen in any of those countries is almost... almost as good at English as I am. ("Almost almost" because the gap is big enough that one "almost" won't do, but not big enough to say "more than half as good" or something like that. Maybe I should've said "pretty close to being almost at my level.")

While I think that private charity work can do a lot to help people, the fact is that it cannot be reasonably expected to shoulder the burden all by itself. At least, not anymore. We're about 90 years past being able to do so. Hoover made the mistake of thinking that Charities could do everything when the Depression hit.
Happiness is zero-gee with a sinus cold. Now we have 'hurricaners.' People who believe that Obama engineered hurricane Sandy to hold back the job numbers so Obama can the election.
Wait, how in the [EXPLETIVE DELETED] can you blame a single human for Nature shifting heat and moisture around?
What did he do, park Air Force One somewhere in Western Africa for a few hours at full throttle and that somehow created a Tropical Wave, which then in turn created Sandy....?
Like, wow. I'll start calling him President Storm or something.
Happiness is zero-gee with a sinus cold.A government-funded research program that carries out research on the ionosphere was used to create the cyclone
, according to Alex Jones.
He's approaching Harold Camping levels of stupidity.
Quod gratis asseritur, gratis negatur. The same types of people believe Bush planted bombs at the levees in New Orleans so they'd collapse and fail during Katrina. They're very vocal, but very much in the minority. While stupid, they don't deserve much attention. They also have a negligible effect on the election.
So yeah, we can boggle at their insanity, but they're not really going to effect much.
You know if Obama can control the weather I think he'd have done a lot more than make a hurricane. Why couldn't he just cause storms to follow Romney wherever he went so it would look like a bad omen?

*Looks up* Oh, a Hawaiian goddess of, among other things, the wind.
When I hear "Pele," like almost everyone else in the world I think of a god that actually exists

Well its excluding Hong Kong and Macau, so that might be the reason.
Still I doubt China's English speaking population is even over 50 million
