Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

A fetus is not alive until it's out of the womb.
When it can breathe, think, talk, walk, move, all on its own, then it's alive. I effect, when it's in the womb, it's basically another organ.
Is a fetus alive? You could argue that, because as it's in the womb, it's developing into something that will gain life.
Now, the real question is - should men even have the right to so much as talk about it?
In RWBY, every girl is Best Girl.I'm this close to proposing a rule against Godwinning. Maybe we'll have a thump that simply says "Godwin, you lose."
Also, any further posts about abortion will be thumped. If a candidate brings it up, you can talk about it - but only in relation to that statement, not the topic in genral. And don't take this as your cue to go back to the quotes that have already been discussed.

Quod gratis asseritur, gratis negatur. The real winner of this election is George W Bush. It's his policies national security and economic, after all. Obama's resuming, codifying and intensifying them. Romney wants to do the same.
Forget abortion. The real moral issue would be to choose not to vote for the two war mongers running for office.

In RWBY, every girl is Best Girl.Oh, I agree with Grizzly that the motives of the pro-life movement are often highly misunderstood. I just thought that particular article wasn't unfair. I didn't really want to talk about abortion itself - or Nazis, for that matter-, just the perceptions both sides have of each other. That's all.
So, anyways... um, apparently that whole "election" thing is still going on. Fuck.
I'm hoping that the fallout from Sandy won't mess up the ability of folks in PA to vote. I've evacuated to a hotel because my home is in a flood zone.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Because the hurricane has shut down the federal government, the Bureau of Labor Statistics will not be releasing the October Jobs report on time.
Very big Daydream Believer. "That's not knowledge, that's a crapshoot!" -Al Murray "Welcome to QI" -Stephen FryThat was my next point: Fox News and other conservative blogs are saying that the BLS is using the hurricane as an excuse to withhold data until after the election.
Very big Daydream Believer. "That's not knowledge, that's a crapshoot!" -Al Murray "Welcome to QI" -Stephen FryI didn't need a crystal ball to call that.
Those types of conservatives make me ashamed to be a conservative.
...maybe they can't get to work to compile the data...? STOP USING YOUR FANCY REASONING, IT'S A CONSPIRACY.

Happiness is zero-gee with a sinus cold.Maybe they are trying to save lives and vital resources? Nope, Elitist Liberal Satanist Socialism Conspiracy (TM).
Yes its a strawman... but does it count when some people do put that stuff out there unironically?
Correct. Cursed autocorrect.

Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.

Grizzly is right-it makes no sense to argue against a Pro-lifer with a position that fetuses aren't people. You can argue as to why it's absurd that fetuses are people, but you know full well that they don't accept that premise-and probably never will-so discussing it as if they do is missing the point completely.
MOVING ON.
