Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Actually, I think it might be better to let this thread die and make a new thread for the next American elections. I could change this thread's name and make it a general thread for all American elections, but it's already a megathread and I don't know of any reason why it's better to continue from this to 2014 and beyond. EDIT: I just noticed that no one suggested that this thread become the new American elections thread. Oops.
With a new thread for the elections in 2014, people might be more likely to read the thread before they post when the thread starts to grow. If you want new people to enter this thread, it's more or less guaranteed that they'll skip all but the very first and last pages.
So keep using this thread until it fades away and then we'll see what we'll do. For 2013, you might want to have a general thread for American politics. But even with that, it might still be better to have a separate thread for 2014.

Quod gratis asseritur, gratis negatur.Yeah, Grayson did lie about Long, but his overall message is one that's true. I'm not sure what Long himself believes, but he accepted Herman Cain's endorsement, so there's that.
Oh, one other thing. The part in Obamacare that forces insurance companies to stop not covering those with pre-existing conditions? It gets implemented in 2014. Right in the middle of a midterm election. Right when the Republicans could take the Senate.

In RWBY, every girl is Best Girl.At the very least archive it. A lot of pseudo-derails means that we can just link to various parts to show when an argument has been played out.
...now I'm confused. The ad I was talking about was not against Long, but Daniel Webster, the deeply conservative Florida state legislator who successfully unseated Grayson for US rep in the 2010 elections. The outrage over that ad (among other things) led to the much better-funded Grayson dropping from a wide lead to a distant loss after he refused to back down on his statements despite being confronted with both the full context of the video and the factual inaccuracy of his other statements about Webster.
...ugh, just hearing that guy's name puts me in a bad mood. I know this probably sounds crazy, but Alan Grayson is literally one of about half a dozen people in the world who I truly dislike.
<><Well, I'm just going to pop in and add that if you're lying, either about yourself or your opponent, you don't deserve to hold office. Of course, then they're both liars, so you have to choose between the liar whose policies you agree with and the one you don't. That's American politics in a nutshell.
Writing a post-post apocalypse LitRPG on RR. Also fanfic stuff.Grayson lied.
Meanwhile, Webster sponsored SB 2400 in the Florida Senate requiring that all women planning to undergo an abortion receive an invasive vaginal ultrasound. It didn't pass the Florida Senate at the time, but it became state law eventually.

In RWBY, every girl is Best Girl.@Serocco: Can't say I'm surprised about Rick Perry. He's still relatively young and has set the record for longest gubernatorial rule/most terms/whatever phrase is appropriate here.
The system is set up so that OTHER REPUBLICANS can't win against him. And Hutchinson was someone I could get behind, way back when she ran. (For one, she was for spending money on education, and had served as... comptroller or something in the Treasury. The other guy was running largely as a joke.) Sometimes I think Texas is stuck with Perry until he dies. But maybe recent demographic shifts will have taken enough effect by then that it's at least a serious fight to hold onto his position. And that people bring up his major flub in this presidential campaign run. Or he has a repeat of that.
These last couple of pages have made me sad. The amount of cognitive dissonance on display is simply atrocious.
He didn't lie! Well, he exaggerated! Okay, he lied but politicians do it all the time so it's okay! Except when Romney does it, then he's a lying lie liar not fit to hold office!
Instead of making excuses admit the guy lied, is sort of a prick and move on.
Is using "Julian Assange is a Hillary butt plug" an acceptable signature quote?Regardless, Grayson's other positions definitely make him more trustworthy than a Republican. Voting for the Lilly Ledbitter Act, sponsoring the Public Option Act, voting for the Hate Crimes Expansion Act, criticized the Iraq and Afghanistan wars and so forth.
If Perry wins re-election as governor, how are his chances of running for the White House again?
In RWBY, every girl is Best Girl.

If the other guy says he won't quote or follow certain rules from the Bible and your ad then cuts that to sound like they will quote and follow the rules they just disowned, that ad is lying. It's distorting what the other candidate said, just like Romney did to Obama. I don't care whether both sides do it or not. If it's a tradition in American politics to do that stuff, I still don't care. If you ask me if the thing portrayed in that ad was a lie, my answer is yes, it was a lie.
If you want to accuse someone of being a pot and calling the kettle black, make sure you're not a pot yourself.
My point is that you have to call Grayson out before you can expect Grizzly to call Romney out.
