The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I'm neutral on the issue both Long and Grayson have done some shady stuff. Although I'd probably vote Grayson due to his economic stances.

Plus Long was directly endorsed by Herman Cain

Direct quotes from Republicans about rape. Todd Akin, Richard Mourdock and Ron Paul are included here. Clayton Williams and Roger Rivard have the worst ones.

It's stuff like that which makes me agree with Grayson over the whole "Taliban Republcian" stuff.

I'm a tad suspicious of Ron Paul's 'honest rape' quote.

Can you guys not hear yourselves? Grayson is not someone who "doesn't sugarcoat". He's nothing more than a straight-up liar who has no problem whatsoever in making vile and false claims about his opponent's religion or attempting to scare women with imagery designed to make them feel violated by said opponent.

I must say that I agree with the sentiment expressed here. The two videos, when viewed in succession, clearly demonstrated that the ad is a filthy lie. (If you made an ad like that in Finland, well, 1) no one would take it seriously because we don't tend to compare each other to terrorists and 2) if you were caught clipping out bits from someone else's speech in such a blatant attempt to lie about what they said, your political career would be over. Even your own party wouldn't support you after that.)

[up][up] Except this is America, where the Republicans get away with it all the time.

When a Democrat does it, only then do we see the same vitriol that Grizzly's spewing? Come on, now. If you're gonna pretend to care about lying in a political ad, do for both sides.

@Best Of: Yeah, but I don't see Grizzly disowning Romney over this, or this.

The fact is, that's just how politics go in the US. Greyson isn't doing anything that hasn't been done, and been considered acceptable, before.

My understanding is that the ad I just viewed - the one where the other candidate was labeled "American Taliban" - was more or less mainstream.

My off-topic comment about Finnish politics was just to illustrate my perspective. Now, obviously, Finnish politicians lie, too. And they do some silly and illogical stuff in debates. But they don't associate their opponents with terrorists. They never go to such stupid extremes, or if they did, as I said, that'd be the end of their career and possibly a fine for libel. (Just because it's politics doesn't mean you get to go personal.)

@Best Of: Yeah, but back in the '08 election, there were tons of ads doing the same thing to Obama.

Incidentally, that one where Obama is quoting the McCain aide saying "If we keep talking about the economy, we’re going to lose" and Romney's ad made it look like Obama wasn't quoting anyone, but talking about his own campaign instead... I told that one to some of my friends and they assumed it was a joke about what American politics is like. None of them believed that it was real until I showed them both clips. For us, this is a case of Reality Is Unrealistic. If we saw that in a political satire, it might break our willing suspension of disbelief; it's that bad.

Romney's only defence is that he probably didn't actually view and approve the ad, even though it might come with a clip of him saying that he did.

@Best Of: In regards to comparing candidates to terrorists, there was also this ad back in '08 from the Mc Cain/Palin campaign.

Forget ads. Fox News has been claiming Obama and others are terrorists for years. I'd say they're far more relevant.

As for the Taliban remarks I can't say I disagree with them but it's still not something an elected official shouldn't say.

Actually, the terrorist line isn't new for republicans. Fox news has called lots of democratic candidates terrorists outright. Here is the commerce secretary being called a terrorist. Rush Limbaugh calling democrats terrorists.

I can find more. If Grayson's tactics bother you, you should quit the Republican Party.

What did your friends think when they saw it was real?

They were disgusted, obviously. An ad that simply lies like that is a crime, no matter who does it. In our country this would go to court; but I'm afraid the person whose add it was might be deemed innocent if they managed to prove that they weren't responsible for it.

Again, I'm not trying to claim that Finnish politicians don't lie; they do. But manipulating a video of another candidate's speech like that would go beyond what our laws allow.

@Shima: Honestly, if that sort of thing bothers someone, they should probably just stay away from politics in general. This is one of those areas in which both sides do it.

I have no issue with Greyson's tactics or Republican tactics... I have issue with people who think Republican tactics are "evil" but Greyson's are okay(or vice versa)...

It seems to me everyone here was bitching about lies and stupidity from Akin & co less than a week ago, but are currently saying that the lies and stupidity from Greyson is perfectly fine(because they agree with it)...

I don't dislike Akin for lying or exaggerating. That's something all politicians do (and this is coming from a guy who wants to be a politician).

I dislike Akin for not knowing basic knowledge like, women can't naturally prevent themselves from being impregnated by rape.
