The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Former Florida House Representative Alan Grayson is poised to take back a seat in Congress

You may remember Mr.Grayson as the man who called a Federal Reserve Bank adviser a "K Street whore."

Or as the man who described the Republican health care plan as hoping people "die quickly,"

Good, that's one less Republican in Congress.

In lighter news, I've cast my ballot. Early voting FTW!

Regarding mandatory ID stuffs.

I worked the federal Canadian election at an old folks home. You needed something like this to cast your ballot:

1 piece of photo ID

or

2 pieces of ID with at least one having your name and birthdate.

1 piece of ID and someone from within the voting area to vouch for you.

Same requirements to get registered to vote.

I don't know how hard that would be to accomplish in the states but we didn't turn anyone away.

I voted yesterday. For Pope Ron Paul Obama.

@Hilarity: That's not good at all. If you want me to join you in condemning Akin-style statements from my side of the fence you will not be supportive of people like Grayson. This is the guy who ran this ad, using sound bites cut from this video.

Watch both, I beg you, and then stop supporting Alan Grayson.

(sorry for the rant, but Grayson is a bit of a Berserk Button for me)

Third party Presidential debate date changed to Nov. 5 due to Hurricane Sandy

Looks like Stein and Johnson got chosen to debate.

(I wanted Johnson and Anderson.)

[up] EDIT: I'll be adding "Submit to me" as the phrases I should never say as a politician.

Grayson's a dick. The problem is, he's a dick who was fairly on the mark in his criticism of the Republican approach to the healthcare debate. Moreover, while his statements may be atrocious, they did not spread misinformation and doubt nor harm half of his electorate in the way Akin's statements did. Comparing Grayson to Mourdock or Akin seems akin to comparing Dr. House to Drs. Bursynski or Golaszewski.

Grayson comes across as someone I agree with... who goes about it in an entirely incorrect way that only undermines his stance. A correct dick is still a dick.

[up] X5 That was a low way to end it,even if it's probably true.

Not sure what's to hate about Grayson EG,I heard nothing that was vehemently pro-choice in that video at all,I just heard helluva lot of good points and in a very matter-of-fact tone. The lack of Obama-style sugar coating is refreshing.

Good to see someone also stand out against oil drilling everywhere to. Long can say all he wants "of course not everywhere" but the GOP position and the Keystone project pretty much ensure that everywhere is everywhere.

That said neither appear very charismatic.

Wikipedia says he actually tried to push for a public option (THIS), in addition to supporting Ron Paul on auditing the Fed (huh?) and demanding that wars be funded on the Department of Defense's base budget (about fucking time a House rep tries to reign in military spending).

At the end of the day, I truly believe even the most inflammatory Democrats - a category that people who are overly sensational and emotionally manipulative like Grayson certainly fall into - are still better than most Republicans that come to mind simply because they adhere to policy that is more in line with what I believe in. Honestly, the only thing I really disagree with Grayson on is the way he presents himself. I believe conservative Christians do tend to enforce restrictive moral codes, but obviously the Taliban comparison was absurd. You can be aggressive and stick to your guns without making offensive comparisons. Now the difference is that with Republicans, it is their initial premises, not just the extremes they take them to, that are ridiculous. Akin's ignorance of basic biology is a good example.

Now that I got that out of the way... admittedly, that was a terse, kneejerk reaction on my part made mainly because the balance in the Senate is a rather fragile thing right now. So, I'll clarify that I support his policies, but I don't appreciate his casual comparisons to terrorist groups.

Moreover, while his statements may be atrocious, they did not spread misinformation and doubt nor harm half of his electorate in the way Akin's statements did.

Did you watch the videos I linked to? He took from Webster's talk to a bunch of men on praying for their families, and I quote:

"don't choose the [verses] that say 'she should submit to me'. That's in the Bible, but pick the ones that you're supposed to do. So instead 'love your wife, even as Christ loved the church and gave himself for it', as opposed to 'wives submit to your own husbands'. She can pray that, if she wants to, but don't you pray it."

And clipped the phrases "she should submit to me" and "wives submit to your own husbands" to try to claim that Webster wanted to suppress women through legislation.

In doing so, he not only blatantly falsified his opponents views but also perpetuated the same vile lie of conservative Christian misogyny that the liberal movement continues to allow and even encourage within its ranks.

This is, if you haven't noticed, something that greatly offends me.

We've gotten to a point where guys like Grayson, who is far less of a sugarcoat than Obama, are considered inflammatory assholes.

Because since the Republicans do it so much more often, it scares people when they see a Democrat do it.

I'd love to see more aggressive progressives who don't sugarcoat things.

That doesn't mean they have to compare people to the Taliban to get their point across. You can point out the absurdities of your opponents without sinking to that.

I don't use inflammatory to refer to anyone who has a spine, it's reserved for those who can only express themselves in the brashest of ways.

Can you guys not hear yourselves? Grayson is not someone who "doesn't sugarcoat". He's nothing more than a straight-up liar who has no problem whatsoever in making vile and false claims about his opponent's religion or attempting to scare women with imagery designed to make them feel violated by said opponent.

Ugh, I can't get worked up about this right now. I have homework due in less than an hour. I'll be back later.
