The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

That's normal.
Not entirely. I believe Wall Street has, at least, (recent) history being on the side of the Democrats. Up until the Democrats started trying to regulate Wall Street for nearly causing a economic mega disaster.

Obama was the Wall Street candidate in 2008. Wall Street does better under Democratic administrations than under Republican ones.

[up] And they still want more, so they want the Republican, even though the Democrats give them better breaks.

It's never enough with these guys.

So while doing research for the local positions here, turns out Oregon doesn't have day-of registration because a cult tried to take over a backwater town by shipping in tons of homeless people a few days before the election to vote for them.

See, that's election fraud.

[up][up][up][up]Really? Then why do they let Republicans claim that Democrats are stifling business?

[up][up]I'm curious about how they convinced the people to vote for them in the first place.

The Wall Street crowd isn't really the same crowd as the "Regulations hurt big business" crowd. To be honest, feelings about regulation of financial systems and of general commerce tend to vary. From my time on Linked In, I get the sense that there are a lot of Free Market types who blame the regulators for not doing their job. So apparently, they want regulation, they just don't want more regulation, they just want the regulation to actually be enforced.

So, it's a different culture.

Because if there's one thing Wall Street will scream violently at, it's regulations. They HATE HATE HATE HATE controls on the stock trading system.

It looks like Republican Dean Heller will defeat Democrat Berkley for the Nevada Senate seat. Granted, he's only up by two points in the latest poll.

Traditionally, the wealthiest Americans grab new powers and levels of wealth under Republicans, and quietly consolidate them under Democrats. After fucking up so badly in 2008, though, even Democrats realize that the stability of the country depends on reigning in Wall Street, which doesn't want to give up its new goodies.

Share it so that people can get into this conversation, 'cause we're not the only ones who think like this.

[up] Yerp. And with ex post facto laws being unconstitutional in the U.S., any goodies they get during that time, they get to keep.

Wall Street hates Obama, no matter what he does, and no matter what he'll do.

Cut the social programs? They'll donate to Republicans in the Senate. Bail them out with TARP money? Donate to Romney. Doesn't prosecute the frauds and personally appoint them to cabinet positions? Badmouth him for being "too much of a regulator", even though he's deregulated you by the bucketload.

I never doubted the Republicans hold on Nevada.

It seems that the only Senate Seat Democrats are going to lose this year is Nebraska (and possibly Montana and North Dakota.)

Nevada just might go Democrat. A two-point lead in a poll can very easily decrease.

[up][up][up]Yes, Serocco, we've said that a lot of times. You've said that a lot of times before now, in fact. I think the whole Occupy thing still has them freaked out, personally. Once a thing happens once, it stands more chance to happen again. Also, those people are looking for other ways to make their wants happen.

I keep hearing that it's very likely Obama will win the Electoral College, but lose the popular vote. Is that true?

Does anyone find it interesting that Latino voters were once a swing constituency, but now have been successfully turned into identity voters? This has created two solid states for Democrats at the presidential level: Nevada (Senate, Ho R, and state level not so much) and New Mexico.

Bush tried to make them identify with Republicans with amnesty in 2004/2005 but his party derailed his attempt.

[up] Pretty much. Statistical analysis of Obama's popular vote is at 50.3(O)/49.6(R). His electoral college votes are around the 290s. 538. This is a base election, so deep-blue and deep-red states are more solidified in their vote.

If Obama wins the Electoral College, but not the popular vote, the Republicans will cry foul and claim the popular vote matters more.

And then the Supreme Court will decide that Romney will become the president.

Doesn't 2000 kind of contradict the idea that the Supreme Court cares about the popular vote that much? I mean, really now.

If I remember correctly, the recount was repeated twice (or three times), and all but one had Bush win. They stopped the third (or fourth) recount. Recounts are always weird and always controversial.

Serocco is being blindly pessimistic, don't take it too seriously.

That being said, I can see a 5-4 ruling wherein the Supreme Court would hold that the electoral college took priority. Possibly 6-3. I mean, I can see Scalia and Thomas voting in a partisan hack manner. But you're not gonna get the "hard constituionalists" aside from Scalia to vote that way.
