Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

It's not necessarily an incongruity, though. An unborn child is innocent of crime, while a condemned man has been found guilty of a serious one. It's entirely consistent to think that it's right to execute a man for those crimes and yet think it's wrong to kill an innocent.
A brighter future for a darker age.![]()
Indeed. Some crimes are horrendous, and the rate at which rehabilitation is possible is so low as to make it practically impossible. Yet, death is not a good idea, just in case you made a horrible mistake. <shrugs> Time might provide evidence of a cover-up/ mistake/ further source of defensive evidence.
It's a bit late to pardon somebody when you're saying sorry to the gravestone.

Abortion is one of those issues where you can never really come to a consensus on the issue as the starting axioms are too different.
I mean we could debate why we believe what we believe but then we'd have to start debating why we believe what we believe about our beliefs which would bring us to why we believe what we we believe about- oh no I've gone cross-eyed.
Is using "Julian Assange is a Hillary butt plug" an acceptable signature quote?Obama has been the greatest aid to profit growth since 1900.
Chevron gives the largest donation ever, $2.5 million, to a GOP super PAC.
and according to a top Romney advisor, you aren't poor if you have a microwave.

Very big Daydream Believer. "That's not knowledge, that's a crapshoot!" -Al Murray "Welcome to QI" -Stephen FryGoing back to an earlier thing about the worries of violence if Obama gets reelected, along with all this voter ID and election monitor hullabaloo...
I will say I am quite worried that an Obama victory will get attributed to "liberal voter fraud", no matter the evidence.
Do you highlight everything looking for secret messages?
of course it will. Every libera;l victory ever is attributed to an evil conspiracy to subvert the will of the american people.
Because the very concept that other people might disagree with you for perfectly valid beliefs is anathema to the conservative pundit sphere

Someone at the Romney campaign needs to brush up on his photoshop skills.
You can buy a new microwave oven for fifty bucks. You can get a used or clearance one for substantially less. Given that many poor people are working multiple jobs if they can get it, cooking time may be very constrained, and a microwave may be the only reasonable choice for them.
A brighter future for a darker age. Here's an article with some quite interesting stats.
(I found it through a link in an article that was linked previously on this page.)
I have to agree with EG on this one. This exactly why I voted in favor of abolishing the death penalty in California.
I also voted in favor of the prop that fixes the the three strikes law,...which I would support as is if we had more money to afford the current prison population.
@Tangent: Every victory is called fraud by the opposition, even with evidence to the contrary. Don't tell me you haven't seen a "Bush Cheated '04" Bumper Sticker. No Kerry lost fair and square

I am sure at least in Texas they'll support capital but oppose abortion. I am sure Wikipedia has a section on this incongruity.
