The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

If I'm reading this right then the article is saying that every large district in multiple states is trending either Mitt Romney or Republican. A few is one thing but every single one? Yeah, that seems fishy. I hope a respected outlet picks up on this and crunches these numbers. I'd like to believe it isn't true but given the leanings of the Republican party lately it wouldn't shock me.

There's a helicotper-cam video floating around of US soldiers using a minigun on a group of civilians because they looked like they had a gun (it was a camera), and then when a van full of kids went in to help them, the soldiers gunned them down, too.

At least drones don't laugh when they use overwhelming force.

Update on the continuing conflict between Texas General Attorney Greg Abbott and Foreign election observers

The group calls Abbott’s threat “unacceptable” in a letter to the State Department. Abbott on Thursday tweeted his response: “BRING IT.”

This would be hilarious if it wasn't happening in real life

And now Governor Rick Perry has joined the fray:

"No UN monitors/inspectors will be part of any TX election process.” - Perry

Its funny how they constantly push the voter ID laws over preventing "Voter Fraud" but when someone says "Alright lets investigate Voter Fraud" they suddenly go "WOAH THERE IS NO FRAUD HERE STAY AWAY"

Sigh.

Republicans are gonna win this election and laugh all the way to the bank.

I hope the UN zerg rushes Texas with observers. If True the Vote and racist sheriffs are busy going after electoral inspectors, they won't be able to spare the time harassing black and latino voters.

Don't be too sure.

Many Ohioans Have Already Voted

President Obama continues to hold a five-percentage point lead over Governor Romney in the Buckeye State. Almost all Ohioans who intend to vote have decided their candidate preference and are unlikely to change their mind. Many Ohio voters have taken advantage of the early voting opportunity. Of those who cast their ballots early, 54 percent have reported voting for President Obama and 39 percent for Governor Romney.

All we need is Ohio and Nevada and the election is ours! evil grin

Why cant I shake the fear that if Obama is reelected, there WILL be violence?

There is violence. There was before he was elected. There was while he was elected. There will be whether he is reelected or not.

Of course, if there is some meta reason that precincts with higher turnouts would be more likely to favor Romney (and Republicans in general if this can in fact be confirmed to be a wider trend), then it's a statistical quirk, but if there isn't any common factor to these precincts beyond "easier to hide rigged voting in a larger sample size", then it is concerning. Somebody else should look at it at least.

I don't have the time at the moment to check out the article and the statistics, but from my experience watching election results roll in, larger precincts are usually in urban areas, and urban areas are more likely than par to favor Democrats. Dunno if that's relevant to what your'e talking about.

This would be hilarious if it wasn't happening in real life

I try to forget momentarily that it is real life and then laugh anyway.

Doesn't always work.

If downtown Cincinatti suddenly turns solid red I can imagine a few eyebrows will raise.

Cincinnati is actually one of the redder large cities; I think the city as a whole is about 50-50 D-R baseline. Contrast, say, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, which is like 57-43 D-R baseline.

I don't know. I haven't looked at partisan data enough to say, and when I lived there I was too young to be aware of politics.

(Seriously, when I was six I couldn't tell you that we even had a Congress.)

Pretty much. The further out you are from city and suburban sprawl, the less you ever see evidence of the things liberals claim. Hence hy most rurals cant even comprehend them.

"President Obama continues to hold a five-percentage point lead over Governor Romney in the Buckeye State."

Even before the debates I noted that a five point lead is basically indestructible outside of royally fucking up. Amusingly Obama did fuck up on the first debate but his strong performance for numbers 2 and 3 have lead to a net zero change from before them. He just needs to remain alive and not be in a massive scandal to have this in the bag.

Is using "Julian Assange is a Hillary butt plug" an acceptable signature quote?

A lot of Tea Party affiliated GOP candidates have been self-destructing thanks to caveman-like statements on rape and abortion. Examples include Todd "Legitimate Rape" Akin and Michael "Rape babies are God's will" Mourdock.
