Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

So, one of the final executive orders of the previous administration served to extend Secret Service protection to the Trump family and former staffers. (https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/secret-service-protection-extended-to-trump-family-members-ex-staffers/ar-BB1cYCfW)
Does it strike anyone else that this was just one last opportunity to extend the grift? I can only imagine all of them deciding to hole up in Mar-a-Lago, or other Trump properties.

Having a President who actually LISTENS to him helps.

The funny thing there is Trump doesn't realize that, again, the Secret Service is not loyal to him and his family. They're loyal to the US Constitution.
Which means he could easily be an idiot and incriminate himself infront of them. Which they'd report on.
And you can bet your ass the Secret service would be vetting the hell out of who gets assigned to them.

definitely a crowning moment of heartwarming.

Something of note about today.
21st day of the 21st year of the 21st century.
Semper Fi. Semper Paratus. Vigilo Confido.Well, it was the first full day of Biden's Presidency. That's something of note.
Semper Fi. Semper Paratus. Vigilo Confido.Speaking of comedy, the Late Show
did a parody of Les Misérables saying they only have one day more of Trump jokes.
No one really commented when I posted it before, but for now at least the Democrats seem to not be going for attempts from Mitch to keep the filibuster rules as they are.
Which isn't to say it would be scraped - Schumer wants to go with how things were in 2001, the last time there was a 50-50 split. But it does sound like they're at least trying to preemptively stop Republicans from stone walling as much as they can.

ASAB: All Sponsors Are Bad.Uh...if 2000 was the last year of the prior century, making 2001 the first year of the current century, wouldn't basic counting confirm that 2021 is the twenty first year of said century?
I don't want you to complain about the four years of Trump then, because by your counting logic, 2020 was Trump's third year in office.
The Salt Lake Tribune
has a good article on what's going on with the National Monument Review.
Within the first few hours of taking the oath of office, the White House said the new president signed an executive order calling for, among other moves safeguarding the environment, a review of the boundaries set for Bears Ears, designated by President Barack Obama in 2016, and Grand Staircase-Escalante, designated by President Bill Clinton in 1996.
Biden's order directs the secretary to submit a report within 60 days summarizing the review's findings and providing recommendations for achieving the overarching goals of the order.
For Bears Ears specifically, Obama established the 1.3 million-acre monument at the request of 5 Native tribes. Trump cut it by 85%. At the moment, it does appear the monument will be restored to its former area, but the Bears Ears Inter-tribal Coalition is asking that the monument be "redrawn to encompass the tribes' original 1.9 million-acre proposal" which sounds a bit more uncertain.
Utah Republicans are unhappy.
Utah's entire all-Republican congressional delegation and state elected leaders were quick to oppose Biden's order for a monument review, issuing a joint statement insisting it is "imperative" that Biden "work with state and local elected leaders toward a consensus product, including a permanent solution approved by Congress."

When his ass is impeached/convicted, in an orange jumpsuit and sitting in an 8x10 cell, I'll agree with you.
Sad fact is for now, people need to be reminded of what he did until he's punished for it.
