Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Once they end up as activists against the alt-right, then we can see how they'll be treated. But I don't see that as a likely career path for most of them. I imagine most that do end up leaving the movement will simply return to their daily lives of "not caring about politics" or "both sides bad", and let's not pretend that stopping doing harm is the same as actively working to undo the harm you've already committed.
In any case, working to deprogram or offer a hand to ex-Qultists or ex-MAGAs is a lot more plausible on an individual level, just based on human psychology and whatnot - but at the same time, it's no one's responsibility, especially not minorities', to put in the emotional labor and time to painstakingly deprogram people who would rather see them dead.
It's been fun.

CNN: Last-minute Trump appointee at NSA put on administrative leave due to inspector general probe
The last-minute installation of Ellis drew considerable scrutiny because the role of general counsel at the country's largest intelligence agency is a civil service position, not a political role, meaning it could be difficult for the Biden administration to remove Ellis.
The strategy of trying to install political loyalists into career positions is known as "burrowing" in the government.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Sunday demanded former acting Defense Secretary Christopher Miller "immediately cease" his plans to install the Trump loyalist as the NSA's general counsel. She called the move "highly suspect" and argued it represents a "disturbing disregard" for the country's national security.
"I ask that you immediately cease plans to improperly install Michael Ellis as the new NSA General Counsel," Pelosi wrote in a letter to Miller on Sunday.
The California Democrat also said she was calling for a probe "into the circumstances of the NSA General Counsel selection process" by the department's acting inspector general.
I mean, there are people who used to be white supremacists who reform and go on to make positive contributions to society like creating communities for people like them to heal and find acceptance, or give talks to help people understand what happened to them and how to prevent that from happening to others. Some level of wariness against someone who used to believe in a very hateful ideology is expected but I don't think they're really viewed negatively, if anything just the opposite. I can imagine people who do a similar thing but centered around ex-q membership wouldn't be seen especially badly.
That being said the people who will do that will probably be a small minority and all of this is kind of presumptuous anyway since we're still very early on in this Q fracture. It's hard to say exactly what's gonna happen from here on out.

The Hill:
Rep. Andy Biggs' brothers say he is 'at least partially to blame' for Capitol violence
Gosar's siblings even cut an ad for his opponent in 2018.
Oh, I agree completely.
This isn't something you wrist-slap someone for. Especially when there's the double standard from all the other protests/riots from the past four years.

Semper Fi. Semper Paratus. Vigilo Confido.I'm sure this has been said dozens of times today already, but: as I prepare to go to bed, I gotta say, there is a powerful sense of lightness from knowing that I don't have to worry about waking up to the news that the president has done something else awful or/and stupid overnight.
Nothing is even CLOSE to fixed in practical terms, but wow is the psychological improvement noticeable.
I think whether or not we let these "waking up" types back into the fold depends on whether or not they're willing to apologize and recant their previous sociopolitical beliefs and do a complete 180, fighting for justice for all Americans instead of fighting to maintain - and indeed strengthen - the country's deeply rooted white supremacy.
Do not spare the feelings of those who would not spare yours. The change, for which the council unanimously signaled support, would allow houses across the city to contain up to four dwelling units. City officials said the proposal would help the city alleviate its housing crisis, as well as achieve equity goals, by making neighborhoods with high-performing schools, pristine parks and other amenities accessible for families who cannot afford the rising price tags to buy homes there.

I was there on 4chan when it was created. The "I was fooled by a con job" is a RIDICULOUS excuse for Qanon. These people had to accept numerous fascist talking points and deliberately believe the overthrow of democracy as well as institution of martial law by DONALD TRUMP was a good thing. Plus that their enemies were pedophile Satanists.
It's an evil ideology that evil people embraced because they wanted to. They wanted to demonize their opponents and did so with the most vile attacks possible. They did so because they wanted to destroy democracy.
Which is a comparison to Nazism that I don't want to make for so many Americans but is one that I think is relevant.

What does that mean? That existing but unoccupied single family homes would be converted to apartments?
Downsizing of sacred Native American lands to be reviewed by Biden administration
I misread "reviewed" as "revived" at first and had a panicked "maybe the people saying he wouldn't be much better than Trump were right" moment. I really really hope that "review" is just the necessary first step needed because they can't be rolled back outright without it.
Yeah my understanding is that the housing law used to be that you could only have a single home on a lot, so apartments were banned. Now you can have up to four homes on a lot, so small apartment buildings are now okay.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranAh... The idea of cities having room for new houses is a bit alien to me, maybe because I'm a New Englander and most cities seem full. Most new housing locally is done in fields, and usually Mc Mansions, but I have seen at least one new multi-unit housing complex go up. And, well, a lot of larger houses on big lots in residential areas are now apartments; my first apartment was in one.
On the $500,000 of White House cleanup, this reminds me that pretty much from year one we were joking that Trump's successor would have to have it thoroughly cleaned...
Now real life gave him cause to go the extra mile.

"And as long as a sack of shit is not a good thing to be, chivalry will never die."

@nova92: More just think it's a good idea.
Speaking of Qultists, surprise surprise, Ms. Boeblehead is freaking out about the Mask Mandate on Twitter.
And then tried to claim Biden is a hypocrite for not wearing one when he was basically ALONE at the Lincoln Memorial hours earlier.
