Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

At what you said, earlier... Those are those people gov't doesn't want to help anymore - or definitely won't if anymore Repugs get into power at this point. They need a major transfusinon of aid, knowledge, and common sense needle-shot into them...
As for those Log Cabin guys, they ain't nothing but hypocrites like most of the rookie idiots hindering progress like the Tea Party is, IMHO... Hypocrites and cowards, the whole lot of them.

This is where I, the Vampire Mistress, proudly reside: http://liberal.nationstates.net/nation=nova_nacioObama says he’ll renew pursuit of ‘grand bargain,’ offering specifics on agenda.
What's the Grand Bargain again?
edited 24th Oct '12 6:40:23 PM by DeviantBraeburn
Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016The Grand Bargain is basically a budget that will make cuts to Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security in exchange for whatever meager revenue increases the Republicans will allow. Right now, that amount is literally none at all, and that is the only thing keeping it from passing right now. I only wish I was kidding about that.
Thanks for the info.
International vote monitors warn Texas: Don't mess with us
And the feud between Texas and the international community continues.
I would crack up if Obama sent in the National Guard to protect electoral observers. It could cost him the election and would be seen as the confirmation of 80% of the conspiracy theories about him, but it would be so funny.
Share it so that people can get into this conversation, 'cause we're not the only ones who think like this.... Wait. I'm not seeing the issue.
It's against the law, in most states, to go within 100 feet of a polling place if you have no intention of voting in that polling place and you aren't working in said polling place.
If any organization, even one affiliated with the UN, tries to violate the law of a state, without the permission of the state, it's going to be prosecuted.
What's most amusing to me is that the OSCE seems to think that they would be able to do anything to punish Texas(or the United States) when they do get arrested for violating said law(assuming they do)...
Ace of Spades: Oh. I suppose Junior just liked to associate himself with Texas so much that it stuck. Anyway, I'm sure you realise that I'm just following a basic joke formula here, like all the jokes about how Canada should apologise for Celine Dion or Ireland should apologise for Riverdance, etc.

Quod gratis asseritur, gratis negatur.WAIT WHAT! It's illegal for people who aren’t going to vote to be within 100ft of polling places? Also how the hell does a law like that work in practise? Where are your polling places? Do people have to walk in a big circle to avoid getting arrested on their way to get some milk?
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ Cyran@Silas: That's not actually a law, they're just waving around threats at people who've probably been monitoring for voter intimidation and fraud in places far more dangerous than the US, and who are therefor not at all intimidated by jail time.
@Best of: I'm still not sure I get that, considering that it was in the context of a thread where people like to pile on Texas and occasionally make serious suggestions that my state should secede, and that we hadn't even previously mentioned those other things at all in this thread. It's not like I'm unaware of the stupid shit that happens here, but it's not like it's unique to this state.
Here's a list the voting laws for each individual state
...
Every single state has laws prohibiting various actions(like loitering) within an X foot radius of polling places. Texas, specifically, states this:
Sec. 61.003. ELECTIONEERING AND LOITERING NEAR POLLING PLACE PROHIBITED. (a) A person commits an offense if, during the voting period and within 100 feet of an outside door through which a voter may enter the building in which a polling place is located, the person:
(1) loiters; or
(2) electioneers for or against any candidate, measure, or political party.
(b) In this section, "voting period" means the period beginning when the polls open for voting and ending when the polls close or the last voter has voted, whichever is later.
(c) An offense under this section is a Class C misdemeanor.
Now, it should be pointed out that a Class C misdemeanor is only a $500 fine. But they'd still be jailed for a day(or two) until their arraignment...

A UN whatever they call themselves isn't electioneering, and really not even loitering. (Not to mention that you can claim that of people who hang around for a while waiting for someone to pick them up after they're done.)
Still, compared the violence that's erupted in other places, all of that is very mild and I don't think people professionally trained to watch out for fraud and intimidation are going to be scared off by any of that. And they would very definitely be able to bring media attention to it.

You do realize that this applies to like, all those Republicans and self-described conservatives out there who crow about the debt but support Romney?
