Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I'm sorry, are you guys really challenging my statement that LGBT rights aren't as important as every other issue combined?
Seriously?
Vanthebaron, "every other issue combined" is not "the army." It's EVERYTHING. I don't know if you misunderstood, or just have very weird priorities.
Except for 4/1/2011. That day lingers in my memory like...metaphor here...I should go.Romney campaign says he still supports Indiana Senate candidate after rape comment.
Well everyone's issues can't all be a priority.
As of right now, LGBT rights are right next to Gun Control and Environmentalism in the "issues no one feels like talking about" category.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016If they're in the "no one wants to talk about them" category then why are conservatives fighting so hard to "protect marriage". Quite frankly I feel that conservatives are the ones making things an issue by bringing up "family values" in the first damn place, opening themselves up to criticism by those lobbying for LGBT rights.
Also, protection of LGBT rights ties into things like equal pay, access to proper healthcare, workplace discrimination, etc. So no, they're not less important than everything else by virtue of being tied INTO everything else. Even the military, due to the repeal of DADT and conservative efforts to reinstate that piece of crap policy.
Fine there in the "issues the Democrats don't want to talk about" category.
Still the 3 most important issues in this election are The Economy, Foreign Policy, and Immigration.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016The analysts on al-Jazeera said that this election, foreign policy is not a major issue. They said that before the last debate, and they predicted that both candidates would try to switch the topic to economy as often as possible. And I think that prediction was correct.
Quod gratis asseritur, gratis negatur.![]()
Don't hold your breath - most Republicans in power today and in the past, seem to suck ass at these things...
Largely because they're not all that different on foreign policy other than Romney just kind of being less personable about it.
Romney's not really touching gay marriage because he doesn't need to, and Obama's afraid of losing support with disgruntled Republicans at a critical juncture if he makes it a big deal. If Obama actually cares that much (which I doubt — I think he just name-dropped it early on for token support) we might see it during his second term when he has nothing to lose.

LGBT rights are certainly less important than every other issue combined. If we had gay rights but everyone was penniless and starving, and nuclear war was a reality because of our foreign policy... yeah, that doesn't sound so good. I don't really see that as being particularly relevant, though, since we can maintain the stability of our country and grant LGB Ts equality at the same time.
Honestly, the fact that they're voting against their own interests isn't even all that noteworthy, really. Rural conservatives living in poverty do this all the time.
Whoever wins Ohio (and to a much lesser extent Florida) will win, that's my theory

Those Rural Hicks are the backbone of this nation!
..Explains a lot about this nation doesn't it?

Our nation sucks because everyone in the world thinks we are as stupid as these poor-ass trash woth vote against things that could help them; they are those who truly need actual help more than they know! What's not to point out?!
It's the cold hard truth.

Rep. Paul Ryan Talks Upward Mobility: ‘In This War on Poverty, Poverty Is Winning’
Because Private Sector GOOD, Government-run Programs BAD. Haven't you been paying attention?
I just remembered.
"There are 47% of people who do not pay taxes, who are dependent on the government. My job is not to worry about them."
Now it all makes sense.
There's also the fact that just because people are still poor doesn't mean the programs failed. We just had a severe financial meltdown which destroyed many jobs. It's only natural there'd be a lot of people in poverty. Then you have to take into account that maybe if people got decent benefits they'd have money to spend on improving their social standing.

Disagreed, mostly because I hear the accent all the time
Goode was too curt about everything,he didn't really elaborate at all. But Stein was definitely too shaky,I'll agree with that.
