Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

In short "damp squib" rather than "nuke".
As if that's a surprise.
Trump can donate $5 million to charity in his sleep. Looked at one way, he's holding the money hostage against Obama's accession to his demands. That's balls-out evil.
The mere fact that Trump can afford to dangle that much money around as part of a publicity stunt is offensive. It reminds me of the brief guffaws in the media over Romney offering to make a $10,000 bet with Rick Perry.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Notice I say "run with" not "run as" in regards to Libertarians. Lately it seems that they care less and less for carrying the Republican name, it's just that caucausing with them is the only way they can get any actual power due to the two party system. (That isn't going away any time soon, for better or worse.) As a matter of function, I really don't see much difference between the two at all in this state, so I'm actually quite sour about both groups.
I mean, I know the Libertarians are all "let us smoke our shit" and stuff, but they're also so "free market looooolz" that I doubt they'd do anything to get rid of the privately run prison so rampant in Louisianna. I mean, that's a serious conflict of their major philosophy there and so far free market ideals seem to win out far more than any idea of freedom. I blame this both on their naive expectation of human nature/the idea of purely rational actors and their collusion with the Republican party.
Democrats urge federal probe of GOP voter registration operation
I will be astonished if so much as a single fine is levied over this. If they actually have the balls to press jail sentences, shit will be getting flipped.

Some people in East Asia, Malaysia and South America are taught about "the American continent" and by that... they mean a supercontinent of North and South combined. Much like others are actively taught about Eurasia being a single geographical continent, split up into two (or three/ four) for geopolitical reasons.
Myself, I'm a fan of Afrasia, but, there you go (aka Afro-Eurasia). it's essentially down to cultural teaching practices what you get to call the Americas. <shrugs> Or anywhere else, for that matter.
