The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

If someone presented a death certificate of Barack Obama right now, I don't think the president would need to wait for Donald Trump to say that it was falsified. He'd be quite capable of debunking it himself.

Depends if they were resurrected in America, have been around long enough, and have the intelligence to do so.

Likewise, it depends if they would be allowed since they're not "human beings", technically. Maybe they could, maybe they can't. A Vampire probably could, though.

Dead people win elections every few years. Ashcroft lost to one not that long ago. It usually just triggers a special election afterward.

Under Carter, Reagan, Bush 41, Clinton, and Bush 43, the Senate confirmed between 79 and 93 percent of the judicial nominees put forward during each administration’s first 18 months. The confirmation rate under Obama? Forty-three per cent, or roughly half the historical norm. In 1981, 37 Senate Democrats voted for Ronald Reagan’s tax cuts; 20 years later, 12 Senate Democrats voted for George W. Bush’s. In contrast, Obama pushed seven major bills before Republicans took control of the House in 2011. They received only 15 Republican votes—total.

Since then, very few challenging pieces of legislation have even reached the floor of the Senate, thanks to the GOP’s record-shattering reliance on the filibuster. In the last three sessions of Congress, Republicans have threatened to filibuster on 385 separate occasions—equaling, in five short years, the total number of filibuster threats to seize the Senate during the seven decades from the start of World War I until the end of Reagan administration. A recent study showed that post-2007, with Republicans in the minority, threatened or actual filibusters have affected 70 percent of major legislation. In the 1980s, that number was 27 percent. In the 1960s, it was 8 percent. “This level of obstruction is extremely unusual,” says Norman Ornstein, a congressional scholar at the conservative American Enterprise Institute. “And the core of the problem is the GOP.” "

Man, Jill Stein is a rather poor speaker.

Does she always sound this shaky?

Stein is not among friends there, from what I know of the other people there and her. She's pretty liberal, the rest of them are some stripe of conservative.

Rocky Anderson is not conservative.

Fro Rocky's Wikipedia page.:

As mayor, Anderson rose to nationwide prominence as a champion of several national and international causes, including climate protection, immigration reform, restorative criminal justice, LGBT rights, and an end to the "war on drugs".

Anderson is actually pretty decent from what I can tell. He's too right economically for him to be my ideal candidate (then again so's Obamatongue) but unlike the current two he's an honest to God libertarian. Honestly I wouldn't mind a Rocky Anderson/Jill Stein matchup. It's better than Romney/Obama since I wouldn't have any major problems with either one winning.

[up][up][up] Nope

We have two whole way liberals

One fiscal conservative,social liberal

And one whole way conservative

But they all have a point about these Super-PACS and PACS.

Have to admit,Stein is not an impressive speaker, neither is Goode at least even though he's been a Virginia Rep. for a while.

Anderson and Johnson on the other hand I could definitely see going against Obama and Romney, and they'd beat out Romney.

Darn it where was King during the main debates?

Johnson wants to abolish the IRS and corporate tax? Seriously?
