The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Romney is awful, but he still might win, purely because of rigged voting machines.

I'm tired of Romney. I'm tired of his face, I'm tired of his voice, I'm tired of his bullshit.

I don't just want Romney to lose, I want Romney gone. I do not want any more news coverage of him. I do not want him to continue with a political life. I want him to be forgotten in the same way Bob Dole and Dukakis were.

Romney did say that if he loses he's not gonna pursue a further career in politics.

Possible.

But, he's been called out on it already. If it comes down to that, you can expect a shitload of fallout-way more than Bush had to deal with in 2000.

I hope Romney ends up like Kerry. There are a lot of parallels, apart from Romney losing for now.

I ask again - polls on debate?

I too have a strong feeling Romney will win.

Just too many dirty tricks being used (all the Super PA Cs, the voter intimidation, the voter suppression, the firing threats ) not to mention people seem to buy his car salesman bullshit.

True but the GOP ones outnumber his big time.

At least in my state. I haven't seen a pro obama ad in a while.

Five Thirty Eight is showing a small bounce for Obama coming out of yesterday's debate, indeed, he won it by a larger margin of undecided voters than Romney did for the first one, so everything is not necessarily doom and gloom for Obamafans. I personally predict that Obama will win, but by a margin, not the landslide that 2008 was. The NYT's rolling election forecasts show him with 290.8 electoral votes, to Mitt's 247.2. The Washington Post's "Issue Engine" shows Obama leading Romney on two of the "big three" of foreign policy, social policy and economic policy. (BO has the first two), and their election forecasts also have Obama ahead.

There are no significant debates left in this race, so I reckon it is going to be a narrow Obama victory. He still has the campaign momentum to keep his bounce steady, whilst Romney doesn't have the momentum to claw back enough ground. Just my two cents.

There again, I predicted a Santorum win for the GOP primaries...cool

I'm seeing ads for the site fightforjobs.org . It's a pro-business site. Yeah, I know it's funded by BIPAC, which is technically non-partisan. But when they keep on harping about debt, deficit, and taxes...and just look at their Twitter, highlighting nice lines from Romney and saying how policies are "stifling job creators" and retweeing others' tweets about Liz Warren bringing socialism...yeah, it walks and quacks like a right-wing group.

Anyone who posts false voting requirements needs to redact them immediately (give them a chance to say its a mistake) or else face criminal charges.

So if I get this right, Obama should win according to polls, but Romney might win by cheating?

Otherwise, Obama is the only sensible choice right? I mean, from what I hear, Romney is fairly backward in his politics.

Or am I missing any positive side to Romney?

If you're wealthy, and you want to stay wealthy in the short run, you might want to vote Romney.

By short run I mean the next few months. Maybe.

#34818: Oct 23rd 2012 at 6:12:48 AM

Even ThinkProgress recognizes the voting machine thing as over-hyped silliness. Romney doesn't own the machines, the company just happens to be one of the many sources of his income.

The thing to understand is roughly 50% of America thinks Romney has the right economic, political, foreign, you name it, policies. From massive deregulation and tax cuts to businesses, to country wide abortion bans and the negating of any form of social welfare, to going to war with Russia, China and Iran.

Or am I missing any positive side to Romney?
Barring Romney Presidency + Repub Supreme Court, Senate, House being hypothetically a good example of how to not run government for the rest of the world, if they stick by their inane Convention Platform, uh...

Romney's a hyper cynic? And would do anything survive politically, even if it meant he had to work with Democrats. Though arguably, that isn't a great thing. :x

Edit:

the company just happens to be one of the many sources of his income.
Still seems conflict of interest-y. At this point that's my main concern.

From the Think Progress article:

Dwelling on the possibility that a company tangentially related to the Romney family may tamper with their own product distracts from the very real and far more insidious ways that conservatives are trying to manipulate the election. For starters, the Republican National Committee and state-level Republican parties hired a voter registration firm that is openly fabricating and even destroying voter registration forms. Though the Republican Party has attempted to cut ties with this firm, its operatives are still hard at work on its behalf. Besides these operations, Tea Party group True the Vote plans to dispatch hundreds of volunteer poll watchers whose only role is to try to discredit voters before they cast their ballots. Some local classes have been caught instructing these volunteers to challenge legal voters. If they could simply flip a switch on a machine to negate a voter’s choice, there would be no reason to push voter ID laws, purge voter rolls, disseminate misleading information, or threaten to fire employees if they don’t vote for Romney.

I think voting machine issues are a cause for concern, and there's definitely some amount of conflict-of-interest going on, but I'm much more worried about the fact that those things are insecure and unreliable than any sort of rigging by the machine owners.

Actually, Ars Technica has a feature on the decline of e-voting machines, if anyone's interested.

It is cause for concern, but in the sense "that sounds concerning" *investigates* "ok I guess it's not a big deal", not in the sense "O NOES RMONEY IS GOING TO RIG THE ELECTION FETCH THE MOLOTOVS!" like it's being sold by the handful of blogs that are focusing on it.

But Romney want to go to war with Russia/China/Iran ?!

How can this be anything other than a terrible idea?

Neo Conservatives (and probably War Hawks). They're a bloc within the Republican Party that thinks that whole thing the US did with Iraq and Afghanistan is a pretty neat idea, and we should repeat it with Russia (due to somehow still being our #1 Geopolitical Enemy), China (Romney seems pretty set on potentially starting a trade war by declaring the Chinese currency manipulators and job stealers. If shit between Japan and China gets nasty, I would not be surprised at a Neo Con push for war), and Iran (Gotta free them from a religious dictatorship and stop Nukes).

Or read this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neoconservatism#Views_on_foreign_policy

For a more concise version: Romney's backed by people who think the US must do everything possible from having a country with equal military, economic, and political power from rising up that isn't a friend. And to spread Democracy at all costs.
