Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Elliot Spitzer believes that Obama won on foreign policy, but it was a tie on domestic policy.
John Fugelsang, Cenk Uygur and Jennifer Granholm disagree. Polls agreed with Spitzer last two times. So, how are the polls?
Oh, and Romney didn't talk about the Benghazi attack.

Sorry about that.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayHey guys, do me a favor and spread around that NYT Op-Ed where Romney says to let Detroit go bankrupt. It's a certifiable articulation of his real opinion of American automakers.

@jonnyfrog "Should this war be fought?"
I wish I had an answer to that. On one hand, I'd like to believe that a campaign to win hearts and mind, to address the root of the problem would be more effective than violence. On the other, I can't deny that our current policy has been seemingly effective at crushing out Al-Quida.
I'm a Utilitarianist, so the result matter more than some arbitrary concept of justice. However, I can't help but have the lingering fear that all we've done is created another generation of vengeance-hungery extremists. I also wonder if the whole "war on terror" was more about revenge for a tragic, but isolated incident than any attempt to stem the problem.

@Serocco, that should be enough to sink Romney, as far as I'm concerned.
This is where I, the Vampire Mistress, proudly reside: http://liberal.nationstates.net/nation=nova_nacioJohnnyfog: It's like the Muppets say: The business of business is business.
Dr Tentacles: That's exactly what the War on Terror is. If not for 9/11 we'd have left the Middle East to do as it wanted.

Why would they mention the drug war? It's not like either of them has anything interesting to say on it and it's not a priority issue to most voters.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayYes but ending the Drug War isn't yet the mainstream position. And right now it's mostly a distraction.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayI get the feeling sometimes that if we had decided not to get sidetracked with Iraq things would've been better for everyone. War on Terror? You can't kill an idea, all you've created is a Forever War.
