The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I don't get it.

Oh, sorry. Apparently Governor Romney led a blind teacher straight into a closed door when he was a student. I thought it was commonly known.

You know, I just realized: When you say you love something it's because you're afraid people think you don't.

In a non-romantic sense of course.

There's no question that the drone strikes have been effective at weakening the terrorists, and also no question that it makes ordinary civilians hate the US more, with good reason. The question is which effect is more important and that's a difficult situation.

What is Romney trying to say about blind teachers? That some inside reference or did he accidentally say something offensive?

Obama won that, honestly - even if it sucked ass...

[up] It speaks to character.

Obama won, without question. However, the polls have been holding steady so far.

Obama definitely came out as less awkward and more concise. Romney didn't really have any good burns or make any serious attacks. No horrible gaffes/soundbites on either side.

Romney flat-out endorsed many of Obama's policies in foreign affairs.

That alone shows Obama won.

On the double strike funerals, cause damn this thread is moving fast. Curse my perfectionism.

Sources? If true, I'd say it's less an argument against the use of drones, and more against how they're being used. I'd certainly appreciate more discretion. My bleeding liberal heart would rather have 10 terroists get away than have 1 civilian death. (From both a humanist, and realpolitik perspective.)

However, no matter if you're a soldier in the heat of battle, bursting through a door, and accidentally killing some poor kid holding a gun-shaped object, a sniper kneeling on a hill, trying to pick the correct target, or a man sitting in an air-conditioned bunker, piloting a robot drone, I understand that making the right call can be tough.

Obama won. Romney seemed very nervous and didn't actually contradict the president on any point, while Obama blasted Romney on flipflopping.

I dont know how Romney can even challenge Obama on foreign policy...

Obama has strengthened our ties with our allies, while Romney pissed them off, AND Osama Bin Laden is dead.

So Obama is now 2-1? That's good. At least he won the majority of the debates. Biden also won or at least tied with Ryan.

I think this was a victory for Obama, especially if a significant number of viewers caught Romney lying or believed Obama when he cited examples of Romney's flip-flopping.

I was especially impressed with Obama's precision strikes against Romney's policies, such as the one about Romney's foreign policy being that of the 1980s, his social policy from the 50s and economic policy from the 20s.

The bright shining distinctions, mr. commentators? Obama gave twice as good as he got and Romney had to dodge the questions.

I understand that making the right call can be tough.

Well, in that case, it goes right to the root of that matter. Is this war being fought effectively, or should it be fought militarily at all? I concede from that standpoint, the use of drones is immaterial.

Personally I believe it was a tie, Obama was correct about the horses but incorrect about bayonets. (Yes people, we still use them)

....The rest I got bored.
