Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

"This is the land of opportunity. If you don't have access to it, you have not put in the effort to better yourself. If you fall on the lower end of the scale due to circumstance or ill luck, it's not our job to prop you up. The economy is a sorting hat that elevates the worthy and leaves the unworthy behind. If you are unwilling or unable to take advantage of it, you don't deserve anyone's help.
This is something that people genuinely believe."
Yes, and with an addendum that one should be kind and charitable toward people you actually know: ie, your neighbors, members of your congregation, co-workers you know by name, that sort of thing. The rest of the world can burn.

That's almost as many people who voted for Biden in Georgia.
I'm not sure if Schumer has some sort of power he can invoke over this, but he did day this earlier:
"The House will pass a bill to give Americans $2,000 checks. Then I will move to pass it in the Senate."
He promised no Senate Democrats will object and dared Senate Republican to do the same.
Edit: Okay, turns out any one senator can move to pass a bill, but by the same token any one senator can object and that kills the motion dead.

If Schumer has had a way to force senate votes on bills and hasn’t been using it before now...
It’s possible there’s some special exception, I’m wondering if the majority leader gets first crack at the senate schedule, as long as it’s full nobody else can put anything in it, but right now it’s empty because the senate is meant to be done, so Schumer can actually put something on the schedule himself.
Edit:
Where are you finding that? I’ve found the rules around how a Motion to Proceed or a Unanimous Consent Request work, but nothing around who can schedule such a motion or request.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranAccording to this article
, "...The Senate Democratic leader, Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York, announced Monday that he planned to try and quickly pass the measure in the GOP-led chamber through requesting a unanimous consent agreement, which can be blocked by any senators who opposes it."
It sounds like some special procedure that can get a bill to the floor but can't guarantee it will come to a vote.

X3 It’s the military budget, so while Mitch can kill it he’d be defunding the entire US military if he did.
Right, so Mitch can still kill it personally by objecting himself while having all the other Republicans support it.
Yea and no, Mitch would still have to personally walk onto the senate floor and vote against having the COVID-relief increase get a debate, that’d make great footage for the Dems in Georgia to include in an ad asking if people want Mitch running the senate.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranMitch is at least asking his Senators to override the NDAA veto. Gotta wonder how Georgia two most famous insider traders will vote though, because either move gives their opponents ammo (and opposing Trump could invoke his ire right before all those Republicans go out to vote in person...).

Having said that, I suspect it isn't what I think it is.

This is the bill about renaming military bases?
