The General US Politics Thread

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Georgia had accurate polling.

First, the backdrop: Of those who are not voting in the US Senate runoffs, a disproportionate number are conservative. Of those who identify as "very conservative," 55% say they are not voting in the runoff elections because "the voting process is rigged." This compares to zero percent of liberals and very liberals. Another 7% of "very conservative" voters say they are "intentionally boycotting" the runoffs. This compares to zero percent of liberals and very liberals. So those are the headwinds that incumbent Republicans David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler face.

Oh, if they're not just out to mess with the pollsters then this is glorious.

Ossoff has jumped on the stimulus situation:

Even @realdonaldtrumpsays $600 is a joke.

@Perduesenate, do better.

I imagine Warnock will do the same thing soon if he hasn't already.

I'm quite happy to see the Dems exploiting this, if the Republicans refuse to pass a larger stimulus (as they probably will) we're going to get lovely new ammunition for the runoffs.

I wonder if Trump even comprehends that his push for a $2000 per person relief bill is helping Democrats.

And now Schumer has joined in.

This is one Trump intervention that I am definitely not unhappy about grin

[up]I've heard that this is revenge for Mcconnel acknowledging Biden's victory, which personally I think is highly plausible.

Part of me doubts Trump is that clever, but if it works.

In less helpful news, Klobuchar went on Rachel Maddow's show to call Trump's veto threat "an attack on every American" and insist Congress should override his veto. Sigh. Someone toss a stapler at her and get her on message.

Part of me doubts Trump is that clever, but if it works.

I'd chalk it up to his bully instincts, bullies are adept at recognizing points of vulnerability that you can push to hurt someone. This is in many ways no different.

And it helps that he'd also be shown in the news as fighting to give people money, which feeds his desire to be loved.

Sourced from Twitter, but with links to the supporting documentation, lawyer Mark Elias posts that a conservative group has filed a federal lawsuit challenging the election results, naming Mike Pence, the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives, several governors and legislators, and the Electoral College as defendants.

I'm not kidding: they are suing the Electoral College. As if it's an actual physical location or legal entity. Also, Mike Pence is apparently now a part of the Deep State.

We're supposed to reach out to and compromise with these people. Sure.

Remember that any bill has to get past both houses of Congress, and neither party holds both houses of Congress. To get his bill through it would need bipartisan support.

Are you certain? Were there any bills that were passed in the last few years?

Trump's been threatening to veto the bill over renaming bases named after Confederates and not going after Twitter for fact checking him. Is that what Klobuchar is talking about overriding?

No. This is specifically about the COVID relief bill tied into the larger omnibus package. Youtube link. Even if you are completely generous and assume her objection is to unemployment getting cut off (which she mentions in the interview), it's stupid optics in a situation where Trump just handed the Democrats a bat to use on Republicans. If even Pelosi and Schumer can get on the right page (and I have very little faith in them), then she has no excuse for this.

Another lawyer has done a breakdown on the insanity of the above lawsuit. Aside from trying to sue something that does not, in fact, exist (because the Electoral College is a name for a process and not a thing), the relief requested is that the VP and Congress be stopped from carrying out their constitutionally mandated duty to... I think, count electors. There's more, but it's... silly.

Including one of the complaints being, apparently, that state legislatures are not in session.

This may come as a surprise to anyone who has not heard of federalism, but it's maybe just a tiny bit unlikely that federal courts can tell state legislatures when to meet.

One of the attorneys who's supposedly spearheading Trump's legal challenges. He's been trying desperately to whip the MAGA base into greater frenzy, but judging from the number of people starting to (thankfully) lose faith in him and the GOP establishment, this particular breakdown comes across as his most satisfying yet.

Happy for you guys if everything works out, specially since the amount of infighting Trump's choice is going to cause would probably neuter the GOP for years to come.

Specially since it'll likely exploit the hell out of their Evil Is Petty mindsets when and if litigation starts hitting, rather than unifying them to claim the defendants are "martyrs."

I finished reading that legal thread.

It's apparently the most stupid lawsuit to date, but I don't even know where to start on summarising it. The fact that it wants to throw out 130 years of elections as unconstitutional on the basis of an invented requirement for state legislatures to certify each and every vote is probably the big one.

I don't think it's revenge against Mitch.

At a time when Trump is trying to find ways to subvert the election and remain in power, he would very much like it if every American suddenly had a $2,000 check in their pockets with his signature on it. I don't think it's much more complicated than that.

Hello? I'd hate to seem overbearing but I'm nervous about this and I'd like to hear the possibilities from someone who is more knowledgeable about this than myself?

I find it really disturbing nobody is talking about it on the forums I've visited, including this one.

Its because people are having an overreacting panic attack to what essentially amounts to a nothing burger.

Even if it got passed exactly as it was wrote down, all it does is increase the penalties of already existing laws, while unlike the European Unions recent attempts at copyright extension allowing exclusions for sites unknowingly hosting content, and providing almost no changes on the end user especially in cases where there not deliberately engaging in copyright infringement.

That later part is critical because its exactly WHY youtube for instance has there shitty algorithm, they know it doesn't work worth a damn at actually catching copyrighted content, but its mere existence allows them to skirt enforcement of copyright laws by claiming ignorance. "No we were not knowingly engaging in copyright infringement, look right here this AI is supposed to tell us when there is a case of it so we can take action"

So you might lose a few sites that are already engaging in what is pretty illegal, that have names similar to 234movies, and vieamo (names changed incase naming them is agianst the rules), but youtube and twitch will be fine.

I am one of the first people who rails about how copyright law is way too restrictive, and how politicians who don't know what there doing with it need to stay away from the internet.

But all things considered this one is on the tamer end of things, and its getting equally annoying that any law at all, even ones which are going to do a grand total of nothing, get this amount of shear panic from people.

Like some nations, including my homeland, don't even have fair use as a concept, game streams and lets plays still exist just fine, this is not the end of the world... or well internet in this case, and people have way more important things to discuss right now....

Like you know people starving or being evicted because of lack of covid releif.

Well, that is also the funny thing with the net. It's technically "international waters." Why I usually laugh my ass off when an American tries to claim their constitutional rights exist there (usually freedom of speech).

You only get the rights the owner of the website gives you. If that happens to include the American Constitution, sure, have at it.

Frankly, I have to second Imca. We are seeing Republican Senators leaving folks to starve/get evicted and all what people can get in rage about is a minor copyright bill?

In a way, they're both old news. One's neglect, one's trying to screw people over and line the pockets of the wealthy some more.

In intellectual and ideological terms, the Republican efforts to kill the poor are definitely worse. In practical ones, to me? Well, the copyright changes have far more impact beyond the borders of the US. The comparative lenience of the DMCA has been beneficial and most large media sites are resident in the US, so if things tighten further there then it has international effects.

Well, and if they managed to stick more stacked copyright provisions into law is an open question. "Republicans are restricting how much aid can be given to the poor" is just a statement of fact.
