Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

If it wasn’t for Mitch’s ability to stop things being even bought up for vote Dems could add that in and make some great political hay.
They still should. Pass the House bill with the $2,000 payments and start running ads in Georgia about how the Dems support the payments, President Trump supports the payments, but Republican leadership in the Senate won't allow you to receive the payments.
Right now is the perfect time to play hardball with welfare.

It’s not his money, so he’s fine spending it in an attempt to make himself more popular.

@Cooking Cat You’re really rooting for a government shutdown and no COVID relief because of a copyright amendment that we’re not even sure is in the bill anymore?
I think you should reevaluate your priorities.
Looking at it I think the bill has actually already passed, thus why Trump can made his claim now, I don’t think it can actually be amended. Also it can’t be delayed further, the government will shutdown if there’s any more delay.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranI still can’t find solid conformation of what’s been passed and if it’s been included or not. I’ve been trying to find the text of the bill but the best I can find is a section summary here[1]

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranPelosi has already responded to it.
Republicans repeatedly refused to say what amount the President wanted for direct checks. At last, the President has agreed to $2,000 — Democrats are ready to bring this to the Floor this week by unanimous consent. Let’s do it!
This is a really wonderful response, she's using Trump to attack the Republicans. Thus ensuring that regardless of what happens we win, either by the new UBI passing thus helping people or Mc Connel very publicly opposing the Dems on this matter thus possibly tipping the scale in Georgia.
It's magnificent

Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal, head of the Progressive Caucus, has taken up the call, too. [1]
We've been pushing for $2,000 for months! Let's get it done. Money in people’s pocket-unanimous consent, GOP?
There's no way that the Republicans will agree to it
Indeed, which is quite bad for them now that Trump has made it a topic of discussion.
Not only would it enrage independents but we could very well see them fighting amongst themselves with Trumpists going after Establishment types.
That's not to say that our victory is inevitable, but with the runoffs, this is the worst possible time for them.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangIn more Good News; SurveyUSA released a poll that have both Warnock and Ossoff (D) further in front against Loeffler and Perdue (R)
; Ossoff/Perdue 51-46, Warnock/Loeffler 52-45.
Keep in mind, it is a poll and polls sucked this year, but apparently Survey USA was basically spot on this year. If we truely are seeing +7 and +5 for our guys in Georgia, we might pull off a miracle and get a Blue Senate come January 6th.

And speaking of copyright crap, Tillis has made yet another horrible copyright proposal: https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2020/12/disastrous-copyright-proposal-goes-straight-our-naughty-list
