The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

California Secretary of State Alex Padilla will become out state's first Latino Senator, replacing Kamala Harris.

It’s kind of bizarre that CA of all places has yet to be represented by a Latinx.

The pick is....safe, predictable and...fine? Newsom was under pressure from multiple groups to pick someone representative so he seems to have gone with the closest ally he could while also being the first Latino senator.

Newsom's power here, too...he picks one senator, probably a second since it's likely Feinstein resigns before too long, the Cali Secretary of State and AG...Cali has such a deep Dem, bench.

When is his term up? I gather he's been getting a lot of flack for things like not following his own COVID rules, including a recall effort, so I wonder how long he's likely to last as Governor.

Also, for the stimulus...yeah, 600 bucks is insufficient. But Schumer and Pelosi didn't "let" this happen. They're dealing with a group wholly indifferent to human suffering.

Not totally indifferent. The Republicans saw that their uber rich plutocrat candidates in Georgia were suffering from a lack of votes for a stimulus check. So they swallowed their disdain for the needy and compromised on their "Get bent" standard so that the Georgia Republicans could say, "Look, I gave you money!"

If you want more money, vote in more Democrats. It’s as simple as that.

He's up for reelection in 2022. I think this is the third or fourth time the Republicans have tried to get a recall done this year.

The one that recently died of COVID? He was a state senator if I'm remembering right, so whatever is done it won't affect Washington. It would probably depend on his state's procedures.

Republicans can read?

On a serious note, of course they're not given time. It's right before Christmas and it's a bill the GOP is already being armtwisted into considering. They want it voted on so they can go to their super-spreader parties.

We've officially crossed into a Bizarro World, as Pat Robertson is calling Trump out regarding the election and Believing Their Own Lies about it.

"The president still lives in an alternate reality, he really does. People say, ‘Well, he lies about this, that and the other,’ but no, he doesn’t lie. To him, that’s the truth," Robertson said on Christian Broadcasting Network. "It's time to move on."

"I think it’s all over. I think the Electoral College has spoken. I think the Biden corruption has not totally been brought to fruition, but it doesn’t seem to be affecting the Electoral College, and I don’t think the Supreme Court is going to move in to do anything," Robertson added.

But he quickly followed this up by saying he expects Biden to not be in office for long, and that Harris will become President during the first term.

He also said Biden will be dead right after his inauguration so that Harris can be sworn in, so let's to give him too much credit.

TL;dr on the whole copyright thing, it just makes a new venue for copyright claims. Also, the 30K amount is for 2 uploads.

Trump’s Longtime Banker at Deutsche Bank Resigns
Rosemary Vrablic, who oversaw hundreds of millions of dollars in loans to President Trump’s company, will leave the bank next week.

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/12/22/business/trump-deutsche-bank-rosemary-vrablic.html

EDIT: Here we go: https://www.reuters.com/article/us-deutsche-bank-rosemary-vrablic-idUSKBN28W2CI

     Story
Donald Trump’s longtime banker at Deutsche Bank AG will be stepping down from the German lender, with the move coming as the bank looks for ways to cut its relations with the U.S. president.

Rosemary Vrablic, a managing director and senior banker in the lender’s wealth management division, recently handed in her resignation, which the bank accepted effective as of year-end, Deutsche Bank spokesman Dan Hunter said in an emailed statement.

According to the New York Times, which first reported Vrablic’s resignation, she arranged for the lender to grant hundreds of millions of dollars of loans to Trump’s company.

The resignation of another longtime colleague of Vrablic, Dominic Scalzi, has also been accepted by the bank, Hunter said, without mentioning reasons for the resignations.

Vrablic and Scalzi both joined Deutsche Bank in 2006 from Bank of America.

The Times reported that Deutsche Bank in August opened an internal review into a 2013 real estate transaction between Vrablic and Scalzi and a company owned in part by Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law and a client of Vrablic.

Reuters reported last month that Deutsche Bank was looking for ways to end its relationship with Trump after the U.S. elections, following negative publicity stemming from the ties.

The German bank, which first started lending to Trump in the late 1990s, has been dragged into congressional and other investigations looking into the real estate mogul-turned-politician’s finances and alleged Russia connections.

As of November, Deutsche Bank has about $340 million in loans outstanding to the Trump Organization, currently overseen by his two eldest sons.

[up] I saw that article about Deutsche Bank. Honestly, I think Trump will bounce away from this one. He's been collecting hundreds of millions from gullible Republican donors who think all their cash will help turn the election around.

It's kind of astounding how Trump manages to constantly weasel his way out of any consequences, and depressing how it seems like he'll manage to cover his debts via gullible Republicans.
