Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

A Twitter post can be linked if it's a reputable source, but it should be quoted and/or described and the source clearly stated. It should also not be treated as confirmed fact without a supporting article.
I cite Twitter frequently but only as proof that "X person said Y".
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"The basic principle I adopt is that my post should stand completely on its own, you should be able to understand what I’m saying and why without following any links I attach. The sources should be supplementary, not required reading.

https://www.axios.com/trump-mcconnell-election-283ae665-ef68-43fa-ba2e-1bfdeabf1f81.html
Why it matters: It's an extraordinary broadside against McConnell by the sitting president and most popular Republican in the party, ahead of a crucial runoff election in Georgia on Jan. 5 that will determine control of the Senate.
- "Sadly, Mitch forgot,” reads the top of the slide sent to Republican senators by Trump's personal assistant, written in red for emphasis. “He was the first one off the ship.”
Between the lines: While both the message and its delivery targeted McConnell, they also carried a subtle warning to other Republicans who may follow suit as the president grasps at the last straws of his election-fraud claim.
- Trump’s remaining power over the GOP is not his waning authority as president, but the perception of his lingering ability to make or break politicians in their re-election campaigns.
- Many Republicans have been loath to criticize the president despite a string of court losses, including at the Supreme Court, because of their private fears that an enraged Trump will attack them and turn his band of loyal followers against them in a primary campaign.
In the case of McConnell, who survived a $93 million onslaught from veteran and Democratic challenger Amy McGrath, Trump’s slide points to polling that showed the Kentucky race in a dead heat until June 19, when the president sent a tweet endorsing the Senate leader.
The slide [not included in this post] shows polling tightening again to 51%-40% before an Oct. 31 Trump robocall. McConnell's final margin of victory over McGrath was 57.8%-38.2%.
Notably, McConnell's wife Elaine Chao still serves in Trump's Cabinet as transportation secretary.

I don't want to hear any American Conservatives complaining about their stimulus checks being too low. If they voted Republican they all deserve to have "Pull yourself up by your bootstraps" screamed in their face every single time they complain about it.
Just what they all deserve. Feel sorry for kids in their care though.
Has it been confirmed that it's in the version that passed? Everything I've seen so far just talks about it being amended to the initial senate version. Assuming you're talking about the copyright thing.
Also if republicans were insisting on it then the option may have been to include it or shut down the entire government.

What's specifically trashy about it? If it's the streaming rider aren't we just waiting to see if the House keeps it along (which means Pelosi didn't let it through), or is it something else and, if so, is there a viable alternative option that could have been done?

The thing that makes me angry about it is that they seriously expect people to accept $600 after getting $1200 before? That is not something negotiable, period. And we shouldn't even be negotiating with those terrorists to begin with, considering they're willing to destroy democracy for their own ends.
"In a move surprising absolutely no one"Speaking as someone who is in an income bracket to receive stimulus payments, I personally wasn't expecting to even get another one at all unless Democrats seized the White House and Senate.
$600 may be far less than what we need but it's still a damn sight better than nothing, and it's $600 more than we could have expected from a Republican POTUS and Republican Senate. You might be wealthy enough to just see it as dog scraps, but for us, it's $600 closer to financial stability in an economy designed to bankrupt and kill us.
There is a difference between biting the hand that feeds you and criticizing the meal portions. I will criticize the meal portions until they're actually of a reasonable size. But please do not bite the hand on my behalf. When all is said and done, my family still needs to eat. You are not helping us by insisting that we should starve.

I'm poor, really poor. As in, I don't make enough to even file for taxes. So for me, just seeing $600 would be a massive increase. But I know I'm not going to get it, and the people who are going to get it could use a hell of a lot more than that. Had they started with $600, I wouldn't be batting an eye about it. But cutting it in half? No, somebody needs to be decked in DC for this.

"In a move surprising absolutely no one"To Republicans it absolutely is. Democrats, especially in Georgia, need to make it clear that they would've gotten more if not for Republican stonewalling.
Are you considered a dependent? You might be ineligible to receive payments if you're a dependent.

Why didn't you get the first stimulus, then? People who don't make enough to file for taxes were still eligible for the $1,200 the first time around. I had one person in my household who has never filed taxes in her life; she's schizophrenic which has prevented her from ever finding employment, and she's also been screwed out of ever getting Medicare for reasons I cannot fathom. She has zero income and has always had zero income.
But places like Turbo Tax offered options to register people for the original stimulus who didn't have tax information on file with the federal government. We set her up and she got her stimulus like the rest of us.

Also, about those "three-martini lunches" - Washington Post
President Trump has for months talked about securing the deduction - derisively referred to as the "three-martini lunch" by critics - as a way to revive the restaurant industry badly battered by the pandemic.
But critics said it would do little to help struggling restaurants and would largely benefit business executives who do not urgently need help at this time...
During negotiations, however, Democratic leaders agreed to the provision in exchange for Republicans agreeing to expand tax credits for low income families and the working poor in the final package, according to a Democratic aide who spoke on the condition of anonymity to share details of internal negotiations.
Yep. Which is pretty much how bipartisan legislating works; concessions from one side in exchange for concessions from the other.
In terms of eating the rich, we can't just slam the rich hard and fast with dinner forks in our hands so long as Republicans still control one chamber of Congress and/or the Presidency. The Senate has the power to reject our dinner forks. POTUS can also veto dinner forks.
When the Right holds political power, we have to negotiate necessary assistance for the poor in exchange for favors for the rich. We can't break out the dinner forks unless we can obtain a trifecta. And we need to do everything in our power to prevent the Republicans from gaining a trifecta because when that happens, the rich break out the dinner forks to eat the poor. Which is what happened in December of 2017 with the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.
Which all goes back to that one basic principle of democracy: to see the change that the left wants to see in the world, the left must win elections.
