Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

To quote the top comment:
Every single time a suggestion to do something involves keeping a nice, neat database listing everyone that could ever be considered a victim...
Honestly, the Ars Technica comments are pretty good, they manage to go through how this once again harms the people it's supposed to help directly, and the usual bizarre definitions that would presumably require this level of verification and restriction for anything featuring no human actors whatsoever. It's just another anti-porn bill, with Think of the Children! replaced with a different group.

@Will Keaton: No. Congresscritters can't be forced to act in good faith, ever.
We really need to get the boomers out of all of our key leadership roles.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Can you share a source on that? All I’ve seen so far is that they want the bill generally, nothing say they’re supporting this specific amendment. Especially as Pelosi has previously stopped the amendment becoming law.
Only voting him out.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranThat, and remember not EVERY baby boomer is an ignorant tool. Probably roughly the same amount of those for Xs through Zeds, just on different things, after all.
The whole "anti-porn" thing is really just an outdated "conservative values" movement. Likely currently being brought up to change the narrative, as usual. Catering to the masses who voted them in and all that.
Definitely in the case of Zoomers, given a lot of them call ANYONE born before them "Boomers." It's happened to me at least a dozen times, and I'm just barely a Gen Xer (born Mid-1980s, youngest in the family). It's pretty much just their go-to insult if they're disagreed with at all, much like a certain American Political party and "Communist/Socialist."

Semper Fi. Semper Paratus. Vigilo Confido.I'm know I'm the resident guy who keeps harping about California, but the LA Times just released a new article
that does more to explain the tactics behind the 4 Republican victories there:
- Although most Asian-Americans voted for Democrats, the Republicans made the greater effort to specifically court Asian-American voters.
- The main method was by appealing to many Asian-American immigrants' concern with foreign policy in contrast to second-generation AAP Is who are more concerned with US domestic policy. Said main foreign policy issue many single-issue AAPI immigrants are concerned about is China and the spread of communism/socialism.
- The California Republicans made huge efforts to, ironically, recruit immigrant voters by publishing non-English materials and deploying bilingual volunteers who could sway Asian-American immigrants not fluent in English, and thus more likely to fall into the Republicans' powerful non-English media bubble
.
- The defeated California Democrat candidates support the notion that the Republicans not giving a fuck about pandemic safety can them a crucial advantage in courting voters while the Democrat campaigns handicapped themselves to obey Governor Newsom's restrictions.
- The victorious Republicans relied on a substantial demographic of Californians who wanted Trump out of office and voted for Biden, but still felt disgruntled with local California Democrats enough to vote for Republicans down ballot.
- The California Republicans have recruited a base of conservative Latinos who have served as police officers or military personnel, which blindsided Democrats who underestimated the numbers of conservative Latinos.
- The California Republicans are much more cautious than their peers elsewhere in the country, and regularly criticize or try to distract from Trump's national policies when confronted about them. They instead portray themselves as being concerned with local California politics first and foremost, and as an "alternative to Trumpism" within the GOP.
Unfortunately the whole anti-porn thing goes much deeper than just boomers. Sure, on the whole I'd wager younger people have more favorable views of sex work overall, but sex work as a whole is still the one field where people will gladly "use" the workers and then toss them aside like trash without even any lip service to their work being of real value. It's viewed as an inherently undignified profession where anyone in it at best is an exploited victim. It's one of the most deeply rooted societal values out there unfortunately.

Joy of ingrained taboo.
There are places in the world where legal prostitution actually does work and has a lot of legal oversight, IIRC, like the Netherlands. course, I believe they actually get monthly checkups and health benefits there too. that said, the taboo still exists there as well.
Course, the Pandemic's caused all sorts of havoc on that front too.
Is a rather good quote involving reps of the workers (who're currently out of a job as legal brothels are shut down) saying this: "politicians talk about them, rather than talking with them, which leads to wrong decisions, based on the loudest voices, in stead of listening to experienced sex workers."

That leaves Attorney General, Commerce and Labor Secretaries as key positions that haven't been announced yet.

Specially since as of 2018, the US is roughly 27th on education rank in the world.
It was 6th back in the 90s.
Somewhat ironically, the system itself is the second-best in the world, which means the problem most likely lies in accessibility to it in the first place.

Semper Fi. Semper Paratus. Vigilo Confido. There's also a bunch of other sketchy shit in the COVID Relief Bill besides the copyright stuff. It gives five hundred million dollars to Israel, tax cuts for horse race owners, doubling of the health care budget for Congress members only, tax deductions for three olive martinis for business lunch meetings, and thirty three million for "democracy programs in Venezuela":

Semper Fi. Semper Paratus. Vigilo Confido.I get why they slip blatantly hyperconservative stuff into the mix, is it common for frivolous stuff like that to get thrown in too?
🏳️⚧️she/her | Vio Rhyse AlberiaThey do that to buy votes, pure and simple. Some congressman promised to support it in exchange for a provision or two. Whether any particular provision stays in the bill depends on whether they really need that person's vote or not. This is just how Congress works.
I'm done trying to sound smart. "Clear" is the new smart.![]()
Yep, the COVID relief bill was rolled in with an omnibus government spending bill, so some of the stuff that is unrelated to COVID is part of the latter, not the former.
The measures were then bundled together and sent to the Senate, where it passed by a vote of 91-7. The bill now heads to the White House for the president's signature.
And I thought we frowned on linking to random Twitter feeds here?

TBH, at this Rate, i think Pornhub's just toast. that verification bit that put in place a bit back pretty much made about 80% at minimum of the stuff on it no longer watchable at all.
