Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I think that big is just trademark trolls, which are a problem that need to be dealt with.
The biggest giveaway that this whole thing is shady as hell is how the people behind it are trying to pass it, as an amendment to a must-pass government funding bill, not as a stand-alone bill that would have its case argued in full before congress.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranIn happier news, just saw a Twitter video
showing a News Max anchor being forced to retract all the bullshit Newsmax has said about the Dominion voting machines for two beautiful minutes because the threats of lawsuits against them has forced them to state the truth or else.
Well, I know bothsiderism is impossible to avoid, but I thought this forum will just limit itself to Hillary/Biden/insert random democrat here is just as bad as Trump. I never expect to see "there was no good side in the American Civil War" here and even invoke the Godwin with the "Clean Wehrmacht" myth as well. Next stop in the slippery slope! There was no good side in WW 2! Coming soon!
I'm not as witty as I think I am. It's a scientifically-proven fact.Maybe we should not get into meta analysis of a situation that already been dealt with by a mod?
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranI didn't mod-mode my post. I prefer not to if I don't have to.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"More importantly, it was a single person who was criticized by everyone else.
Not to mention that it seems kind of hilarious to seriously argue that this Forum has a habit of equivocating between Democrats and Trump, which shows an amusing ignorance of this thread's culture. If anyone attempted that they'd get, rightfully, shot down immediately.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangAh, sorry about that. I just want to make a joke in my previous post, but I commit an epic fail there. Once again, sorry about that.
Huh, I had no idea you were joking.
<shrugs> Fair enough.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangTBH, I was really just pointing out history is weird. And i welcome criticism. I mean, the entire point of this forum is civil discourse, learning, and sharing your opinions on happenings that pertain to the topic.
Least that's the gist I get.

Funnily enough, technically there was no Good/Bad side in WW 1. WW 2's a whole diff story, but WW 1 was basically just everyone getting dragged into an imperialistic fight because of an astoundingly massive web of defensive pact treaties.
Also, my point was more the fact there WERE quite a lot of Wehrmacht who didn't know what was going on. There's eyewitness accounts from allied soldiers about German Po Ws being genuinely horrified when they actually saw one of the Camps. Granted, from what i've found online, it's likely also dependant on what front they were deployed on. Western Front Wehrmacht look to have just shipped them off to camps for the most part, whereas Eastern Front Wehrmacht just shot Jews en Masse.
In any case, this is the US politics forum, I'm sure we've got a WW 2 forum somewhere as well.
Anyone got any news on that front?

Well, next time don't say there was no "good side" in the American Civil War because nothing is ever going to make the Confederates even close to neutral. You could say you think the Union could do better and fair for its day, but to equate them is just banal.
I mean there is a reason in fiction that want to make the entire thing more grey, the author invent some sort of new heinous crime for the Union equivalent or make its member take a level of jerkass while whitewashing and make the Confederates equivalent more saintly and kind because you do not need to make stuff up to make the Confederates equivalent bad and evil.
And ignorance has its limit. It is not a penultimate "Get out of jail" card. Nazi's war crimes happen in years, not just days or months. And the anti-semitism and racism that permeate it don't come out of nowhere or Nazi alone.

Agreed.
The Union were the people who fought the pro-slavery side and then ended slavery, if that doesn't make them the good side then I seriously question what possible use that phrase even has.
I don't think the North was perfect, <grumbles angrily about Reconstruction>, but they were definitely far better than the Confederates.

Heck, the idea that "people didn't know what was going on" has also been thoroughly debunked - if anything, many Germans were willfully ignorant about what happened to their Jewish neighbours and other minorities.
Not to mention that the German army - and that means German soldiers - were actively involved in atrocities both in the east and the west.
"Wir haben es nicht gewusst" has pretty much become a meme to mock post-war Germans' denial of any knowledge or responsibility and the very notion of giving this any credibility at all is offensive at best.
And the less said about Germany's (and its allies') conduct in the days leading up to World War I and during the war itself the better.

In case you needed a reminder about how fucking evil these people are.

Wait, I thought that bill has been struck down. When a pandemic is happening and is nowhere close to ending, I think this kind of thing really should not be a priority. I know we already have the vaccine, but it doesn't mean mission complete. There is the matter of distributing and convincing the people to take it. And there is also dealing with the aftermath of this pandemic. Time to google this bill again I suppose.

X4 He’s stuck it on the latest senate bill, that doesn’t mean it’s going to be in the final bill. The House can do what they did before and pass a version without the amendment.
Unless the amendment was part of the negotiations and is being allowed in exchange for something like the stimulus cheques.
X3 It’s not a bill, it’s an amendment that keeps getting shoved onto bills then it fails because a version of the bill without the amendment gets passed.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranOn a side note, I do thank you folks for giving me some insight and history homework to do. Definitely some more in-depth study to focus on concerning a lot of things i thought i was at least decently knowledgeable about.
And the implosion (and raving insanity) of the Trump Administration continues.
Semper Fi. Semper Paratus. Vigilo Confido. For context, the story is about William Barr contradicting Trump.
Barr refutes Trump on Hunter Biden, voting machines, Russia hack
Why it matters: Barr has rarely contradicted President Trump so openly, but he did so three times in his last press conference as attorney general.
As Axios' Jonathan Swan reported, White House officials have become increasingly alarmed about Trump's behavior after an Oval Office meeting last week in which he discussed commandeering voting machines and appointing conspiracy-spewing lawyer Sidney Powell as a special counsel to inspect them.
Barr was viewed as one of the loyal members of President Trump's Cabinet throughout his tenure, which will come to an end after a rocky few weeks in which Trump privately discussed replacing him with somebody more willing to do his bidding. What he's saying:
- On Hunter Biden: "I think to the extent that there is an investigation, I think that it's being handled responsibly and professionally, currently within the department. And to this point, I have not seen a reason to appoint a special counsel. And I have no plan to do so before I leave."
- On voter fraud: "I see no basis now for seizing machines by the federal government. ... If I thought a special counsel at this stage was the right tool and was appropriate, I would name one. But I haven't, and I'm not going to."
- On the Solar Winds hack: "From the information that I have, I agree with Secretary Pompeo's assessment. It certainly appears to be the Russians, but I'm not going to discuss it beyond that."
Worth noting: The purpose of the press conference was to announce new charges related to the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Scotland in 1988, which killed 270 people. Barr first announced charges in the case as attorney general under President George H.W. Bush in 1991.

And on top of that, we just got another anti-porn bill introduced: https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2020/12/pornhub-squarely-targeted-in-bipartisan-bill-to-regulate-sex-work-online/

It would be super nice if copyright trolling could be punished severely.
