The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Democrats in Texas and New Hampshire are forming committees to examine the party’s failings in last month’s election. Less formal autopsies are underway in states across the country. But the party that lost the presidential election isn’t soul-searching at all. So I guess that 2022 will see Trumpism 2.0

[up] Almost comically, in the one state where Republicans (or at least ones not affiliated with Baker’s wing of the party), failed miserably, they come to the conclusion the reason they failed is because they aren’t enough like Trump.

Yeah, I can understand people don't like being treated as a potential threat by someone's security detail.

Not to mention that they can make a neighbourhood feel less safe, paradoxically, because the security implies there are threats, and because controversial people like Trump attract protesters and other folks you may not want to hang around your kids.

[up]x4 and x2: Yeah, I can't really laugh at the Republicans going "we lost cause we weren't crazy enough" when that was what they did after Romney's defeat in 2012 and, well...

Someone did tell me life was going to be this way.

Bingo, the Republicans reaction to losing with a strong but relatively sane conservative was to embrace an authoritarian, populist bigot. And for 2-4 years it worked. Hell, even now it kept them intact outside of the White House.

[up][up][up]. Luckily, it’s in Massachusetts, so there isn’t much chance of that.

They actually tried running a Trumpublican against Baker a few years ago, and he got absolutely crushed.

Trump could never sneak out of the country.

Why would he have to sneak? He just has to leave the country while he's still President and then not come back.

According to Wapo, someone was able to hack Trump’s Twitter account by guessing the password.

The password in question?

“maga2020!“

[down] apparently, it was just independently verified.

[up]It has happened three times already by now.

All by people who guessed his password on less than three attempts each.

Wasn't that the same password or almost the same password? Kind of easy to predict, a lot of people are stupid enough to only change one or two characters after their passwords are leaked

We've been over this before, Trump is likely perfectly capable of leaving the country after leaving office. Nothing bar an explicit court order would stop him, and it is unlikely he would get one.

Leaving the country of his own volition whilst there's still a pandemic going on would be quite difficult. Plus you can hardly let a former president go unescorted to a foreign country, so I highly doubt Trump is perfectly free to go gallivanting off to Russia to escape legal troubles. Definitely not any time around the inauguration.

And yeah, he'd have to sneak to avoid legal trouble? If he's actually required in the country, it seems kind of unlikely that the secret service is going to help him stay away.

Narcissistic, yes. Stubborn, not necesarily.

Look how quickly he dropped the LOCK HER UP once he had what he wanted. He wants money, that is all.

Speaking of which, how much money is he making from his supporters desperate to keep him as president? I recall the fundraising for the lawsuits had some note about most of the proceeds going into paying Trump's debts or something.

[up][up] Except in this case, he's digging himself so deep that not even by standing on top all of his sycophants and henchmen pyramid, he'll get out from that hole.

Just standing there and... watch... the sky as the rain all comes down and smear away the face-paint from his pale, corpulent, visage, as the Trump Empire drowns in his own debts once exposed to the surface.

If this actually happened, it would be pure poetry.

Because his debts are very real.

And the collectors, are about to get him once he's out in January...

I know that the Georgia Senators are being screwed because the fine print to their donations means that 75% goes to the Trump funds, and 25% goes into the RNC (of which only some goes back to them).

And Trump probably won't be able to stay in another country to avoid prosecution or investigation. How many countries are willing to have embassies withdrawn and sanctions levied for Trump's sake? North Korea, maybe?tongue

He does not need to go to another country. I very much doubt any of his debts or acusations will hurt him in the slightest. I do not think he will see a smidge of consequence for anything he has done in the last 4 years.

Him in prison is a chimera.

If New York demands his extradition and a foreign country shelters him (and by extension, effectively takes custody of him and all the classified data he has), DC will be forced to react. Sheltering him is to risky, and he just isn't that useful anymore.
