Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I'm totally fine if Trump doesn't show up for the swearing-in. Good riddance.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I don't think he'll be dragged out of the White House on Inauguration Day. Rather I think he will try to leave early for Mar-A-Lago so he feels more sure that the authorities won't be able to investigate him for tax fraud. Although the people at Mar-A-Lago are trying to prevent Donald from moving in.
"Wow, no Mega Togekiss in Legends Z-A. Or any non-Froslass new Sinnoh Mega Evolutions. Round of applause, everybody." - Dawnhe'll hide in a cupboard somewhere and become 'The white house ghost'
have a listen and have a link to my discord serverThe smart money is on him leaving the country (to Russia maybe?) to escape the reach of the New York courts which should be after him the moment he loses the title of President. I dunno if Trump belongs in the same sentence as "smart" though.

Almost makes me wonder how much of Trump's delusions were fed to him by his base and not vice-versa. It gets hard to tell sometimes.

While it won't make up for anything he's ever done, there's a bit of schadenfreude and amusement to be derived from Trump kicking and screaming as he's dragged out of the white house.
Think of the memes.

It has always been the prerogative of children and half-wits to point out that the emperor has no clothes@Titan Jump Unlikely. The Secret Service would probably not let anyone close enough to interfere. Admittedly, I can see Trump's cultists trying something, but it's worth noting that any fight between them and The Secret Service would be a Curb-Stomp Battle.
Leviticus 19:34An interesting insight into the mindset of extreme conservatives:
The GOP is always looking for a fight
:
"There has long been a widely held belief on the right that the problem with Republican politics is that it is too nice, that Democrats and their lefty allies play hardball while conservatives stick to outdated forms of decorum. For such believers, Trump is a welcome relief from the "surrender caucus," also sometimes sneeringly known as "Conservatism Inc."
...This assessment will come as a surprise to anybody who remembers (for example) when conservatives pushed the false theory that the Clintons had Vince Foster murdered, or when leading Republicans sidestepped "birther" rumors about then-President Barack Obama, or when Senate Majority Leader Mitch Mc Connell (R-Ky.) blocked Obama's appointment of Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court, or anything about the careers of operatives like Lee Atwater, Roger Stone, and Karl Rove.
Indeed, if American politics is a knife fight, many observers would say Republicans have more than held their own in recent decades. And yet, for the Trumpier precincts of the right, that's not enough.
...And yet, Mc Connell has belatedly acknowledged that Biden has won the presidential election, which infuriated Trump. "Republican Party must finally learn to fight!" the president tweeted on Tuesday. Mc Connell has also occasionally cut deals with Democrats, or let the Dem-controlled House fight directly with Trump while standing to the side, which means astounding headlines like "Mitch Mc Connell's Complicity with Democrats" and "Mitch Mc Connell's Lame-Duck Sellout" are a mainstay at Trumpist websites like American Greatness.
...The big problem with the right's "always fight harder" mentality is that it is anti-democratic, reducing politics purely to the exercise of your own side's will, instead of acknowledging that other factions will sometimes win elections for lots of other reasons — a bad economy, an unexpected pandemic, or a platform that simply appeals to more voters. It also exerts negative pressure on politics, which should be about getting things done for all Americans. Instead, the fight becomes the most important thing, the only thing, with participants judged primarily on their ability to "own the libs" or "have all the right enemies" instead of their capacity to do anything useful."
Explains a few things. I note that in other news, Republican Senators are planning to stage a debate on the election when the reconvene in January. Mc Connell has asked them not to, but he's getting a lot of pushback.
I'm done trying to sound smart. "Clear" is the new smart.Really? I thought this show was available internationally.
Meanwhile, Trump has eased rules on... showerheads. Specifically, on limitations of water flow.
Wow, guess he really was serious about that after all.
And in even funnier news, Trump's neighbours at Mar-a-Lago are petitioning Palm Beach to prevent Trump from settling down there, because they don't want him around all day.

Hope shines brightest in the darkest timesDemocrats in Texas and New Hampshire are forming committees to examine the party’s failings in last month’s election. Less formal autopsies are underway in states across the country. But the party that lost the presidential election isn’t soul-searching at all.
So I guess that 2022 will see Trumpism 2.0

Trump has threatened not to leave the White House on Inauguration Day, report says
Few believe Trump would actually follow through on threats to squat at the White House, according to CNN's report, published Wednesday.
"He's throwing a f—-ing temper tantrum," one advisor told CNN. "He's going to leave. He's just lashing out."
It's been nearly six weeks since President-elect Joe Biden's victory became clear, and Trump has still not acknowledged his loss.
Some Republicans who had held off acknowledging Biden's win, notably Senate Majority Leader Mitch Mc Connell, did so this week after the Electoral College confirmed it with a vote.
Trump, however, continues to push a claim that Biden stole the election through widespread voter fraud, a theory that even his own outgoing attorney general recently said was not supported by evidence.
CNN reports that Trump has frozen out advisors and associates who have tried to get him to accept the loss.
One person, who described himself as previously speaking with Trump regularly, said the president hadn't returned calls since he tried to get him to reevaluate his stance on the results.
The CNN report cited advisors as saying Trump had begun to privately accept his loss late last month but then changed his mind and appeared to truly believe he was robbed of the election.
"He's been fed so much misinformation that I think he actually thinks this thing was stolen from him," a Trump advisor told CNN.
Multiple sources who spoke with CNN said Trump had made it clear to his staff that he didn't want to talk about whether he'd attend Biden's swearing-in ceremony.
People close to him told the outlet they thought it was highly unlikely that he would go.
Business Insider reached out to the White House for comment on the CNN report but did not immediately receive a response Thursday morning. The White House declined to comment to CNN.
