Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Yeah the house version (which lacked the rider) got passed in the senate by a voice vote and signed by Trump.
Slight problem, the house version only funded the federal government for a week, so we need either a budget or another CR before midnight Friday.
Anyone want to take bets on if Trump is petty enough to veto the budget and cause a shutdown because he’s angry about the Electoral College voting?

They want someone so extreme that it makes Amy Covfefe Bidoof look moderate in comparison.
"Wow, no Mega Togekiss in Legends Z-A. Or any non-Froslass new Sinnoh Mega Evolutions. Round of applause, everybody." - DawnIt isn't even something that's exclusive to one side of the aisle. There was a lot of worrying (in fairness, not unreasonably so) that the results in key states would be close enough that the SC would find a way to fudge things in Trump's favor, but that just didn't end up being the case.
The moment that it became obvious these scenarios would never play out is when the republicans like Romney, Mitt, etc started trying to distance themselves from Trump as the results came trickling in Biden's favor.
Because the thing is, the SC may be composed of sharp partisans but they are not beholden to Trump. They aren't beholden to anyone really, but if they do care about what someone else wants, it's much more likely to be what Mc Connell and other establishment republicans want, and not Trump. And if I had to guess, I think on at least some level Mc Connell and others in the party know that they don't really need to do as anything as overtly antidemocratic as trying to install a dictatorship for a guy who clearly lost the election, when playing the long game (mostly obstructionism) and relying on more subtle means like gerrymandering/voter suppression/etc will suffice and are already working in their favor.

Speaking of Mitch the Bitch, Dems should put everything into their hands to counter the GOP agenda. T*** is the first boss that has been defeated, and now the next one is Mitch and his goons.

As long as it's him getting vaccinated.
FDR got polio in his life, which left him wheelchair-bound IIRC. I'm pretty sure Mitch compares himself to FDR because they both had polio. There's always something about Mitch that always pisses me off.

Evil Turtle is merely practicing Pragmatic Villainy, playing the "reasonable Republican" role to bamboozle you. He's been doing that frequently over the last decades. There is nothing to gain for him by becoming an antivaxxer and he's no ideologue.

X3 Mitch didn’t get the vaccine, he had to build immunity to polio the old fashioned way, by suffering through the disease.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranI mean, it says a lot about Trump when Mitch actually comes off as reasonable, next to him.
And like I said, the MAGA-Cult already wants his head on a spike for it. They actually call him a RINO. That's how far gone these people are.

x2I bet that to cope with the polio he ate lots of fried chicken. He's probably a big fan of KFC.
We shouldn't be soft on Mitch either. He's like the next boss of the video game we have to beat. Dems need to counter Mitch, Lindsey and the rest of the GOP to ensure they don't get their dream-world of right-wing authoritarianism. They are bad people and the lives of millions of people must not be dictated by their actions.
I really wonder if Mitch is really gonna pull a Karma Houdini for everything he has done.

"Wow, no Mega Togekiss in Legends Z-A. Or any non-Froslass new Sinnoh Mega Evolutions. Round of applause, everybody." - DawnIt looks like Donald might not be able to move to Mar-A-Lago after all.
You can and should since they can just look at the history of the court to see that a Conservative leaning court doesn't always make conservative rulings, court was conservative when it aproved gay marriage, conservative when it approved interracial marriage (which wouldn't be a popular ruling for DECADES, it wasn't until the last one that support for interracial marriage outweighed support against it), and conservitive when it ruled that LGBT is covered under employment protections.
Would having a court in our favor be better? Fucking yes it would, this part is not up for debate....
But a conservative court isn't Armageddon either, and unlike a conservitive congress can be played around if you know what your doing, and take the time to do it.
The fact that people keep talking about it like its this insurmountable wall that is worth throwing congress over is stupid, and ignores the history of the court.
The fact that the MAGA mooks are crying out over the SC not being reactionary enough just disgusts me though. If it were up to them they would get rid of the remaining liberal or centrist judges on the court and entirely staff them with idealogues like Stephen Miller, Steve Bannon and other members of the Alt-Right.

I really hope that Ossoff and Warnock win the runoffs in Georgia so that Mitch could look and face some consequences for his actions. Of course it may or may not happen. Reality used to have a liberal bias until T*** appeared out of nowhere and took control of it.
What ultimately protected the election from the SC was that the margin of victory was great enough that no reasonable person could dispute it. Hundreds of thousands of votes across half a dozen states can't be balked at.
If Biden had only won by a few thousand votes, or it had come to like a few hundred in two states, we might very well have had court intervention.

Oh, the rider didn't make it? Cool, I was wondering.
