Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

What's so insidious about "irregularities but not enough to overturn the election", is that it is technically true. Like take Michigan for example. When those two assholes were making noise about not certifying they were pointing out that when you sum up the total number of votes from each polling place it is off from the total number votes in the county. The thing is that is totally expected in any election due to minor bits of error in just counting that many ballots. And it happens in every election. And it only amounts to something in the order 10s of ballots to at most 100s. The election in michigan was decided by 150,000 votes.

You can only write so much in your forum signature. It's not fair that I want to write a piece of writing yet it will cut me off in the midTrump Voters Angry That Bookmakers Are Paying Out on Biden's Election Win

Ah, 2020, when "people betting on the Presidental elections" is actually a news item.
So, let's hang an anchor from the sun... also my TumblrAnyone who bets their life savings on a highly volatile election (or...anything else) shouldn't be allowed to gamble at all.
Like, if people have hundreds or thousands of extra bucks to burn? No problem, not my cup of tea but it ain't my bank account. But when gambling ruins the lives of entire families, that's when this online market needs regulation.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects. All those stories of Trump voters betting their lifesaving on Trump winning is deeply amusing to me, it's just a perfect combination of being hurt for their own wretchedness without the excessive effect on others that their stupid behavior normally involves.
It's just <chef's kiss> perfect.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangI don't feel anything but pity for those who lost their fortune because it's likely to affect their families and loved ones as well.
But I don't understand how you could put all your faith in such a person either.
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters. But they are, and simultaneously, they sow seeds for it not being "legal" in a way that is convenient for their narrative.
And the oath and the law doesn't say anything about that.
It has always been the prerogative of children and half-wits to point out that the emperor has no clothesIt's called "Karma" and yes, it does exist.
It just gathers all the bad karma first before dumping it down on the wrongdoers, the more bad karma, the longer it takes before it hits them.
No, it's called stupidity. Karma doesn't exist. The universe doesn't care if you're moral or not.
I feel bad for their kids if they have any, but I don't feel bad for them. Nobody forced them to bet their lifesaving.
Well said, I find their fate hilarious. If it hurts their dependents that's independently sad.

It has always been the prerogative of children and half-wits to point out that the emperor has no clothesThe mistake you made was thinking that humans are inherently anything. If you're tarring Abraham Lincoln and Adolf Hitler with the same brush, you're making an error no matter what coat of paint you use.
Humans are born not knowing a single goddamn thing about anything. They have to be taught to be cruel, and they have to be taught to be kind. Neither good nor evil are fundamental absolutes about the human condition; they are both learned behaviors.
If you want to make a better world, you do it by teaching children. What children learn today will determine what the world looks like tomorrow. That's why the right is so big on privatized education and religious schools; so they can control what values are adopted by the next generation.
The other main way that people learn is through consequences. And, unfortunately, wealth and privilege tend to insulate people from consequences.
Don't make the mistake of thinking that people naturally, biologically lean towards any position on the moral compass. Every person is a product of their upbringing and their world experiences. Nothing more and nothing less.

Thanks for explaining this to me. It makes me feel a lot better.

"Wow, no Mega Togekiss in Legends Z-A. Or any non-Froslass new Sinnoh Mega Evolutions. Round of applause, everybody." - Dawn

Many Republican Senators under oath have twisted the constitution and law to their own favor for decades.
Why would it be different now?
