The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Honestly, I think an incoming President who happens to be in his late 70s merits an early shot. He is vulnerable, and POTUS fits the definition of critical personal for obvious reasons. There are a host of political and operational reasons why you don't want him sick.

Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.

I know here, at least, people over a certain age are supposed to be able to get the vaccine before the rest of the general public. (After medical workers and those in nursing home type situations, though.) That would cover Biden.

@Redmess I'm sure Biden will be leagues more careful not to catch it. This post makes zero sense.

That's beside the point. The point is that Biden is absolutely a high risk person, and should be vaccinated right away, because he is the president.

I mean, do you seriously want to risk Biden dying to COVID?

Biden is the candidate who took the pandemic seriously from day one and have done everything he can and could to avoid the danger of contracting the disease in the first place.

He knows the priorities in terms of the vaccinations.

Unlike a certain incompetent plague-master who keeps holding superspreader events to this day and making the disease even worse than it had to have been through the whole year...

So? People who take it seriously can still get sick. And again, he is too important to not vaccinate right away.

I'm with Redmess on this. Biden should get vaccinated as soon as possible on account of being a high risk person, being an soon to be important government official, and most importantly setting an example for the rest of the country.

He was talking about Trump.

The Trumpists who don't want to get vaccinated aren't going to change their minds if Trump does it. They'll just blame the deep state or Big Pharma or whatever for manipulating Trump.

Yes, I'm sure a good number won't take the vaccine either way, but a good number will do whatever Orange Fuhrer does. We're talking about people who will mindlessly cheer on whatever T**** says during a rally. They're sheep, just have T**** do his usual rallies and eventually the majority will fall in line.

So? Political leadership is too important to let that get in the way. He is the president, so he should be vaccinated. End of story.

And what Parable said about Biden applies just as much to Trump. You may not like him, but Trump can at least still serve as an example for his base.

The thing is, Trump himself is the one actively hindering his own vaccination:

Trump delays a plan to fast track vaccines for White House staff members. – President Trump said on Sunday night that he would delay a plan for senior White House staff members to receive the coronavirus vaccine in the coming days.

Because not everyone can afford to buy a house? Or do you expect the state to provide housing for everyone?

... yes? It's one of the things the state is easily much better at than private citizens. Private renting is something that pretty much never has a benefit for the tenant.

The difference between Trump and Biden is that Trump has, for months, been out there telling people not to take COVID safety precautions. He's been out there downplaying the disease and actively attacking state governments for their COVID safety measures. People are dead because they listened to Trump when he told them that the pandemic is a Democratic hoax.

Joe Biden is our incoming POTUS and he should be vaccinated because he is a high-risk member of political leadership dedicated to helping us solve the COVID crisis. Donald Trump has done less than nothing; he has actively gotten people killed in order to protect his fragile ego.

Again: Trump hasn't just done nothing about the virus. He has done less than nothing. He has done everything he could to sabotage efforts to control the virus. The American effort to contain the virus is worse off because of his leadership.

There is nothing hypocritical about supporting a vaccine for President Joe Biden and not supporting one for Plague Lord Donald Trump.

One of the recurring criticisms of Biden from the Trump camp was that he campaigned "from his basement"- not only is that demonstrably false, even if he did do that, it would be far more responsible right now than Trump's numerous superspreader rallies and events. So yeah, just adding onto what Tobias said.

When is the electoral college vote?
It varies by state.

(checking live tracker showing Trump ahead) God, this is like election night 2016 all over again. Yeah I know it's because most of the states that are done so far are red states but still, I'm biting my nails. Nobody better pull any crap.
