Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

About the White House vaccinations, I actually disagree with Trump's decision. I think political leadership is generally critical enough to be first to get vaccinated.
That goes doubly so for the White House, who have had far too many outbreaks already as it is.
Hope shines brightest in the darkest timesIn theory, the people running our government should be high priority for a vaccine. In practice, they aren't doing much actual running of the government, so...
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"If Trump does not want to take the vaccine, let him be. It is possible to be re-infected with Covid even if you've survived it. If Trump and Miller and McEnany get the virus by choosing not to take the vaccine, whatever happens, happens. We don't care what happens to them.

@Raineh Daze: Public housing would be nice. Over here, it tends to be fucked over by the nimbyism you mention on one end, and well-intentioned mismanagement on the other (such as "drug free public housing," where any drug use gets you thrown out).
What needs to be done is some kind of federal intervention against the NIMBY zoning regs, allowing the creation of studio and one-bedroom apartments that'll collapse the real estate market, hopefully this time for good. Unfortunately, doing that would drive the AARP into the Republicans' welcoming arms.
What political leadership?
Seriously, if your argument that Trump should get the vaccine first is solely based on the need for political leadership...Trump hasn't been providing that. At all.
For the last four years.

Disgusted, but not surprisedWhy would Trump get the vaccine?
He thinks he got "cured forever" just by getting it once (and pumped up on a extremely limited edition of a medical cocktail that the public has zero access to in order to fight of the disease...) and not backing down from that claim.
Besides, those in need of it the most would be the medical personnel that has been struggling the whole year with risk at their lives to deal and still dealing with it...
You're right. We should get medical personnel vaccinated first and politicians later.

You're the one who tried to make the claim that political leadership should get dibs on the vaccine.
And again, what political leadership? The entire administration from Trump to Pence to the Cabinet are all a bunch of incompetent selfish corrupt chucklefucks.
Exactly. People who are at the highest risk should be the first ones to be vaccinated.

Disgusted, but not surprisedAs little as I care about T****'s personal fate concerning Covid, the fact is that his base will mindlessly follow his lead, and if Trump sabotages vaccination efforts, this is going to hurt the entire United States (if not the entire world when those unvaccinated americans travel) by greatly increasing the time it takes for the virus to be eradicated. As distasteful as it is, we need T**** to convince people to get vaccinated, and if that requires him getting the first doses, then so be it.

There is merit to getting politicians vaccinated early, though not before healthcare workers, first responders, and the residents of homecare facilities, and the like. They do vital work (well, when Mitch isn't holding up the entire Senate anyway), travel a lot, meet with other essential employees who also travel, and tend to be packed together while at work.
Plus, if they have their staffers snap a picture while they are getting their shot, they can Tweet that out as a good example.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.

Because not everyone can afford to buy a house? Or do you expect the state to provide housing for everyone?
