Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Jesus Christ, whhhhhyyyyy would you want that?! You want to fracture the left and hand the GOP literally every election in the country? Even MA would be crawling with Republicans if a catastrophe like that happened.
"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."
Again, I clarified in my following post that I was responding to someone positing a hypothetical time when the republican party had collapsed.
![]()
The scenario posited was if the GOP implodes and is rendered impotent as a political entity. Someone said they'd hope some of the "moderate" Republicans would rebuild the party as a remotely rational institution, as a one-party state isn't healthy. However, in this specific hypothetical situation, wherein the reactionaries are no longer a threat, one might reasonably prefer the idea of the two parties instead being moderate and progressive left.

The GOP hypothetically collapses and fragments and the proposed Democratic response is to mirror it in doing so?
Look, if the GOP one day collapsed into two or three parties, that would be the opportunity for the Democrats to capture every single seat in every legislature in every state in the country.
"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."The entire statement here is "If there have to be precisely two parties that hold serious chances of gaining power, I'd rather have a moderate party versus a progressive party than a conservative party versus a liberal party." That's it. Obviously, in reality, where conservatism is not going to become completely irrelevant in the foreseeable future, this is a moot point. No one's actually advocating for the Democratic Party to break up.

The Republicans in the Wisconsin Legislature
are refusing to pay millions owed to counties for Trump's recount. Said counties voted overwhelming for Biden.

Someone did tell me life was going to be this way.Breaking news: El Paso Mayor Dee Margo (R) has lost to challenger Oscar Leeser (D)
. Margo has conceded.
Finally some unambiguously good news for once!!
Sorry to be posting bad news right after good, but North Carolina Supreme Court Chief Justice Cheri Beasley (D) conceded to Paul Newby (R) after a hand-recount of votes found her still behind by just a couple hundred votes. Democrats lost 2 seats on the NC Supreme Court this election, retaining a narrower 4-3 majority. Newby will now be the Chief Justice on NC's highest court. Raleigh News-Observer
About a month ago, Slate
covered the importance of this election:

Thousands of supporters of President Donald Trump returned to Washington for weekend rallies to back his desperate efforts to subvert the election that he lost to Joe Biden.
Sporadic fights broke out between pro-Trump and anti-Trump demonstrators after sundown Saturday. WRC-TV reported that four people were taken to a hospital with stab wounds, and the Metropolitan Police Department told the station that 23 people were arrested.
That demonstration, which drew 10,000 to 15,000 people to the capital, ended late in the evening with scattered clashes between Trump’s loyalists and local activists near Black Lives Matter Plaza near the White House.
On Saturday, police took more steps to keep the two sides apart, closing a wide swath of downtown to traffic and sealing off Black Lives Matter Plaza.
But while Saturday’s rallies, including one on Freedom Plaza downtown, were smaller than on Nov. 14, they drew a larger contingent of the Proud Boys, a neo-fascist group known to incite street violence. Some wore bulletproof vests as they marched through town.
The group saw its profile raised after Trump in September famously told them to “stand back and stand by.”
After the rallies ended, downtown Washington quickly devolved into crowds of hundreds of Proud Boys and combined forces of antifa and local Black activists — both sides seeking a confrontation in an area flooded with police officers. As dusk fell, they faced off on opposite sides of a street, with multiple lines of city police and federal Park Police, some in riot gear, keeping them separated.
One Proud Boy yelled out, “You cops can’t be everywhere!” The Proud Boys later dispersed.
Question: Are The Wrap or Daily Beast reputable sources?

Thank you - I knew they leaned left but didn't know if they were Vox or The Intercept on the journalism front.
Los Angeles County elected a new District Attorney, George Gascon. He campaigned as a progressive and has already begun to implement a number of changes. CBS Local News:
Newly sworn-in George Gascon announced Monday that county prosecutors will no longer seek cash bail for any misdemeanor or non-violent, non-serious felony offenses.
Attorneys who have clients behind bars awaiting trial on any of the affected offenses can immediately schedule a hearing to revisit bail and his office won't contest their release.
Gascon, 66, also told reporters he is taking the death penalty "off the table" and will seek to re-sentence inmates on death row to life in prison.
The former San Francisco prosecutor also declared he won't file any gang enhancements in criminal complaints, saying they undermine rehabilitation, exacerbate racial inequities and unnecessarily crowd jails and prisons.
He also pledged to immediately end the practice of charging minors as adults, and will make victims' services available to families of those shot and killed by law enforcement officers.
The District Attorney's office will also not require victims of crime to testify against perpetrators in order to gain access to victims' services.
Atlanta Journal-Constitution:
Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms declined a position in Biden's Cabinet, though the senior adviser who gave that information to AJC didn't specify which role she had been offered.

It's funny how both sides of the aisle act like infighting is more prominent on the other side. Right wingers say the left eats itself. The left wingers say the right eats itself.
Don't... both sides do that? The whole ideological purity thing? Or am I mistaken and it really IS the right that mostly does it?
