Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Who cares what conservatives think about it? As you point out, they're inevitably going to interpret anything the Democrats say in bad faith. They're not the target audience.
The target audience is the politically unaligned (not so much "centrists" as people who don't have a strong preference) and left-leaning people who won't get out and vote unless rallied behind a cause they feel strongly about.
Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.Utah Sen. Mike Lee blocks votes to establish Smithsonian museums for Latinos and women
"I understand what my colleagues are trying to do and why. I respect what they're trying to do. I even share their interests in ensuring that these stories are told. But the last thing we need is to further divide an already divided nation with an array of segregated, separate-but-equal museums for hyphenated identity groups," Lee said.
Lee's opposition to the bill drew immediate scorn from Sen. Bob Menendez, a New Jersey Democrat and longtime advocate for a Latino museum, who called his approach "pretty outrageous."
"The House of Representatives passed this on voice. The Rules Committee passed it on voice in a bipartisan manner. And tonight, one colleague stands in the way. One Republican colleague from Utah stands in the way of the hopes and dreams and aspirations of seeing Americans of Latino descent having their dreams fulfilled and being recognized," he said. "Just being recognized."
After Lee blocked the legislation to establish the American Women's History Museum, [Susan] Collins said, "Surely in a year where we're celebrating the 100th anniversary of women's suffrage, this is the time, this is the moment to finally pass the legislation unanimously recommended by an independent commission to establish an American Women's History museum in our nation's capital."
I...kind of agree. History is stronger and clearer when you integrate the stories of different groups, not section off each one. “American Women’s history” is just “American history”. If you need more space, breaking museums up by time period moreso than by identity group would be my preference. Yes, you do have to make sure that women and people of colour don’t get short shrift, but integrating them makes the story told by each museum more complete and it permits stronger intersectionality.
If you want to tell the story of, say, the Great Depression, you don’t have one museum that covers “the Great Depression generally” (i.e. mainly as experienced by white men), another on the experiences of African-Americans, another on the experiences of Hispanic Americans, another on the experiences of women, etc. You tell all of them together, because they’re all Americans, and all their experiences are a part of understanding the experience of the Great Depression.

The sheer perfidiousness of painting museums focused on women and minorities as "separate, but equal" and presenting them as an attempt to divide history is just... awful. The museums we currently have (in general) present a very white man-centric view of history, so these proposed museums are along the lines of "if you won't tell our history, then we will". And that's what's being shut down.
This is not a bunch of little museums that only tell one viewpoint in isolation trying to strip apart a museum with a richly woven tapestry of history. It's a politician looking at people trying to tell their stories after being failed by the existing museums, and saying "nah". With some really insidious language, too.
It's been fun.On the slogan question - I brought up "Safety for All" as the rallying cry that appears to be coming out from Minneapolis. But I think it got lost in the discussion.
Could someone verify my assumption that this is a the motto that progressive legislators in Minneapolis are using? Separate from that, what do people think of "Safety for All" in general?
Speaking of Texas: Texas Department of Agriculture head Sid Miller has tested positive for COVID-19.

"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."Forbes: 106 House Republicans Support Trump-Backed Lawsuit To Overturn Election
The suit claims the states' electors should be invalidated because expanded mail-in voting due to the Covid-19 outbreak resulted in widespread fraud and irregularities – an allegation that has already dismissed by courts numerous times.
It's actually at least 109 because 3 additional House Republicans said they had been left off by accident. So 56% of the House GOP supports this.

I care less that they won and more that Trump struck out yet again
"You can reply to this Message!"I’m a page late, but honestly all I can think is that Gabbard (and everyone else who wants to push trans women out of women’s sports) should read up on Mack Beggs. Because of rules like this, Beggs (who is a trans man and takes testosterone as part of hormone therapy treatments) was forced to wrestle and change clothes with female students.
He proceeded to utterly dominate all of his opponents because, hey, having a trans man wrestle with women means the women aren’t likely gonna win anymore. But that’s what these people want, because they flat out don’t understand how hormone therapy works.
It utterly baffles me that the one sport that doesn’t have issues with trans competitors is pro wrestling, of all things. Like, I get why to an extent (winners are pre determined and whatnot), but the outrage over Nyla Rose (a trans woman) competing against other women is minimal.

What a Page Topper.
