Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

That pressure wasn’t organic, it was masterminded by Rudi via his connections with federal law enforcement in New York.
Considering what we’ve learnt about Rudi’s foreign connections over the last few years, it’s not outside the realm of possibilities that the ‘internal’ FBI pressure on Comey was connected to Russia.
This is rather conspiratorial, we know that there is common distrust towards the Clinton because of decades of propaganda and that some FBI agents are right-wing.
There's no reason to assume that Russia was influencing the FBI of all things when those factors explain it more than enough.

For some reason he thinks Biden is gonna release them as part of a plan to let crime run rampant, destroying his LAW AND ORDER!!
5 big problems with Texas' bid to overturn Biden's win at the Supreme Court
"This case is hopeless," said SCOTU Sblog publisher Tom Goldstein, who argues frequently before the court.
To cite a glaring one, the lawsuit, which Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton filed Monday, calls on the court to delay the electoral vote in the four targeted states, Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, to allow investigations of voting issues to continue. That would be unconstitutional, said Edward Foley of the Moritz College of Law at Ohio State University. He points out that Article II, Section 4, says that Congress can choose the day the electors meet to vote but that it also says the day "shall be the same throughout the United States." This year, it's Dec. 14, five days from now.
The second hurdle is that Texas has no legal right to claim that officials elsewhere didn't follow the rules set by their own legislatures. The United States doesn't have a national election for president. It has a series of state elections, and one state has no legal standing to challenge how another state conducts its elections any more than Texas could challenge how Georgia elects its senators, legal experts said.
"This case is hopeless. Texas has no right to bring a lawsuit over election procedures in other states," said SCOTU Sblog publisher Tom Goldstein, a Washington, D.C., lawyer who argues frequently before the court. "And in any event, the justices will think that this case, like the others, should be brought first in the lower courts and not just in front of them first."

I don't think his motives are quite that malicious or focussed. He probably just feels he needs to push through these punishments now that he still can, because he believes in harsh punishments in general.
But we really don't know what his motives are here. He might just be lashing out in the worst way possible at this point.
Hope shines brightest in the darkest timesWe know that Rudi was influencing the FBI, we now know that Rudi has connections with Russia (he’s admitted to working with a Russian spy to get dirt on Biden), it’s not a big leap to consider the possibility that Russia assisted Rudi in some way.
It is entirely possible that Rudi’s influencing of the FBI and Rudi’s connection to Russian intelligence remained totally separate from each other (we don’t know for sure how long Rudi has been connected to Russian intelligence, it could be very recent), but it’s far from absurd to suggest that the two could have connected.

I think a life sentence is arguably a better punishment than the death penalty. If a person committed a heinous crime, they deserve to be cut off from the rest of society as a reminder of what they did. Also sometimes a life sentence would cause the criminal to rightly suffer more for the horrible things they did than an execution.
EDIT:
My apologies.

Uh, considering the US' behavior towards native tribes I don't think this is a title Trump deserves.

Perhaps. But I think we should wait for actual evidence of that before assuming Russians playing a major role, fundamentally the most they've done is fan the already existing flames.
Anti-Clinton hysteria existed regardless of what they've done.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangThe paranoid part of my brain says that they want the case thrown out. They're blustering to look good for the base; they have no illusions of winning.
If they take the case to court and lose on factual merits, then they look like idiots the same way Giuliani does right now. But if the case is thrown out without a serious hearing, they can claim that they fought hard for Trump and were unjustly silenced by Big Government.
As long as their case is never reviewed in court, it can not been proven to be wrong.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.You can't really even call those executions "murders" when they already were on death row to begin with. It's not like he personally sentenced them to death. He's just deciding that their execution is now, rather than later.
I honestly can't imagine the Republicans want four more years of Trump. I think they'd rather find someone they can have more control over.

The caveat is that the nature of that "later" made it theoretically possible that the execution might never have happened. Trump moving them up to now made sure that the possibility of executions becoming illegal can't be a factor.
Why would there be at least four years of no executions being carried out at all? Did Biden make a particular promise I'm not aware of?

I wouldn't necessarily call Trump a mass murdering for this specific thing- although it's certainly morally questionable at best.
I do not, however, think it's hyperbole to call Trump a mass murderer. Certainly thousands of innocent people have died because he chose to let COVID ran rampant. And that really was 100% his decision.
