Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Finally a silver lining today: Texas is not as right-wing as it used to be if there aren't enough GOP state senators there.
Wisconsin, too - after Governor Scott Walker lost in 2018, they stripped a bunch of powers from the incoming Democratic governor. And in Georgia, the state leg. is talking about making it harder to vote again.
Republican State Rep. Louise Stutes will rejoin the Democrat + Independent coalition in the Alaska State House, meaning the chamber is currently split exactly in half, 20-20. There are two other Reps., currently leaning toward sticking with Republicans, who will decide control.
EDIT:
Roll Call: EPA move creates hurdles for future air, climate rules
If it is finalized, the rule - the final version of which has not yet been published in the Federal Register - will steer the agency away from considering the broader public benefits of new regulations, such as the value of fewer asthma attacks and respiratory ailments.
The incoming Biden administration could reverse the rule once in office, but that process would take months or more and require a public comment period.
Proposed in June, the rule, which met swift condemnation from environmental organizations, is the latest in a string of environmental regulations that favor industry the Trump administration is rushing to finalize.

They destroy the environment because it's cheaper than not doing so and therefore the potential benefit of destroying regulators is greater profits, well worth the lobbying cost. Sadly, the entire principle of limited liability means that we can't punish stockholders as a way to discourage profit-seeking at the cost of human life and quality of said life.
Of course then you get some companies that make their niche being environmentally friendly and making profit that way.
Jane Meyer, a journalist with excellent credentials
just reported on a major story regarding Dianne Feinstein appearing to be suffering from severe cognitive decline.
Which meant the ranking Democrat of the judiciary committee was handling the Barrett hearings while being in no shape to and may have screwed over Democrats like Sara Gideon and Cal Cunningham.
Federal criminal investigation into Hunter Biden focuses on his business dealings in China
.
Sounds like there was more to Hunter Biden after all. That's rather unfortunate news. This story could have cost Biden the election, and now it will serve to stoke feelings of resentment against Biden.

Nah, it's simply a continuation of the investigation that started earlier in 2018. It's going into a new phase now that the election is over. The article also notes that Joe Biden himself isn't implicated, though the GOP will likely use it to complicate the AG nomination.

The article even notes that it's unclear whether said laptop is even relevant.
The main takeaway is that the investigation that started in 2018 is still ongoing, and that this will be a test of whether Joe Biden's administration's Justice Department will be able to remain impartial.
