The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC) has snuck in a rider to the latest government funding bill to make unauthorized online streaming a felony punishable by jail time.
This is atrocious. We know who he works for, and it isn't the common citizen.

I'm having trouble figuring out how this doesn't go against states' rights. It *really* comes across as Texas demanding other states disenfranchise their voters as badly as Texas does their own. How dare they!

We've been over this, Republicans don't actually care about any of the principles they purport to uphold except as a mechanism to claim more power for themselves.

[up][up]To reiterate what was said on the previous page, they don't actually care about states' rights. It's just a rallying cry.

Can we just make Texas it's own country again?

People need to strike back.

Can we get people to sue Ted Cruz? I mean personally get lawsuits against all of the Republican lawmakers involved for their actions? The stress and emotional damage? Maybe they'll listen then.

Trump is creating a list of Congress members who want to overturn the election: https://twitter.com/jaketapper/status/1336717508162842627

More like a hit-list for the millions of angry voters who would be after their heads if he succeeded.

Ican only think "better that than the opposite.", since Trump is unlikely to succeed to say the least.

He's defiantly getting desperate.

Anyway, how likely is the streaming thing to pass?

Given that most politicians know too little about anything involving the internet to likely understand why this bill is so draconic, I won't be surprised if it passes.

[up] I think most non-republican politicians would think jail-time for this sort of thing is extremely overbroad.

I don't have pretensions of much reasonableness, but...

If it's something that's getting pushed because those pushing (or just voting) for it don't understand what it would actually mean, that's potentially good, because if you can get enough people writing in angry about it (and why) that might mean the legislators get the idea that it would be Very Unpopular. If you get that into the heads of people concerned for their chances of remaining in office...

(I'm a gullible gussie for thinking this, aren't I?)

[up]Yeah... I think the kind of people who put Tillis and others like him in office aren’t the kind to understand that this is something to vote them out for.

Making streaming a Felony... seriously.

Streaming out copyright material, let’s not get people confused, this isn’t about shutting down Twitch, it’s about turning DMCA from a civil action into a criminal action.

[up]Yes, though it probably won't directly reach you - instead, streaming services will proactively defend themselves by shutting down any stream that hints it might run afoul of the new bill.
