Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I think you would need a more solid case to impeach Kavanaugh than what we know publicly now. It would at least require a thorough investigation, and I'm not sure who would be in a position to start one.
In other news, Trump is holding a vaccine summit... but no one producing vaccines will come to it.
Hope shines brightest in the darkest timesLegal Eagle discusses pardon powers, and how broad and powerful these pardons are.
- The president can give out mass pardons (and this has happened before).
- The president can pardon someone before prosecution has happened.
- The president cannot accept bribes for a pardon, that at least is illegal.
- The president can pardon family members, and there is some precedent.
- The president can pardon his co-conspirators, and this has happened before (Iran Contra, under Bill Barr, no less).
- Resolving all these over-broad powers of the pardon would require a constitutional amendment.
- It is not entirely clear how much power Congress has to overturn pardons, even if the will is there.
- Trump can basically step down at the literal last minute of his presidency and have Mike Pence pardon him.
- The president can't pardon himself, and the SC can overturn such a pardon. But they could also allow a self-pardon to stand by offering impeachment as the proper remedy. So maybe he can, after all. It is definitely uncharted territory.

Maybe he could pardon himself for his many cases of adultery!

Politico: AOC, Rice face off for powerful committee post
Key passages:
Energy and Commerce has the widest range of jurisdiction of any House panel, giving its members outsize influence on Congress' most significant legislation. The committee presides over most health policy issues, including drug pricing; national energy policy from nuclear waste to renewable energy; regulation of clean air and safe drinking water; the communications industry; motor vehicle safety and more.
Both Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Kathleen Rice are privately angling for one of the few open seats on one of the House's most powerful committees. But other members of the New York delegation are so far refusing to publicly wade into the battle, meaning the state could get shut out of the slot being vacated by outgoing Rep. Eliot Engel (D-N.Y.) altogether.
Senior Democrats insist they are still far away from discussing potential slates for exclusive committees, with Speaker Nancy Pelosi and House Minority Leader Kevin Mc Carthy (R-Calif.) continuing to negotiate the ratios for each panel. But that hasn't stopped Rice and Ocasio-Cortez from pushing for a spot on the Energy panel now, with both touting the support of the New York delegation, circulating separate letters with their home state's endorsement.
So far, most Democrats have declined to weigh in on the race publicly for fear of drawing the ire of either Ocasio-Cortez or Rice. Some members privately worry about giving a more prominent platform to Ocasio-Cortez's environmental plank - including her controversial "Green New Deal" - but don't want to invite scrutiny from the New York Democrat and her nearly 11 million Twitter followers or potentially even draw a primary challenge.
The Democratic Steering and Policy Committee, which oversees all committee assignments, faces a similar conundrum when it comes to Texas, where two members from the delegation - Lizzie Fletcher and Sylvia Garcia - are vying for a spot on the Energy and Commerce panel, also likely canceling out the state's chances of landing a seat.
Some senior Democrats on the committee privately would prefer that Steering does not offer the seat to Ocasio-Cortez, whose aggressive style of politics could complicate bipartisan work during the Biden era.
So the entire GOP has entered a strike, refusing to do their jobs out of pettiness, and now holding america hostage until they have their way through and spitting on the will of the people?
How on earth is there not a clause in the constitution that would allow "incompetent, fascistic, personnel" to be fired on the spot and replaced with people who are willing to do the jobs instead?
That's going to be the hard pill for moderates to swallow for the next four years: Biden won the primary on the expectation that his Presidency would be a return to "normalcy". But what most moderates think of when they think of political normalcy didn't actually exist.
Clinton v. Trump 2016 is remembered as the moment when American politics went batshit, but it's not. American politics have been batshit for decades. Clinton v. Trump 2016 is just the moment when the Millennial generation sat up and noticed.
We're not going to have a "return to normalcy", where both parties reach across the aisles and work together as friends and colleagues to better the country. That's not a thing. That has never been a thing, at least not in our generation's lifetime. We need fighters like AOC in Washington because the idea of bipartisanship has always been an illusion.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Youtube will remove any video disputing the election results.
We also work to make sure that the line between what is removed and what is allowed is drawn in the right place. Our policies prohibit misleading viewers about where and how to vote. We also disallow content alleging widespread fraud or errors changed the outcome of a historical U.S. Presidential election. However in some cases, that has meant allowing controversial views on the outcome or process of counting votes of a current election as election officials have worked to finalize counts.
Yesterday was the safe harbor deadline for the U.S. Presidential election and enough states have certified their election results to determine a President-elect. Given that, we will start removing any piece of content uploaded today (or anytime after) that misleads people by alleging that widespread fraud or errors changed the outcome of the 2020 U.S. Presidential election, in line with our approach towards historical U.S. Presidential elections. For example, we will remove videos claiming that a Presidential candidate won the election due to widespread software glitches or counting errors. We will begin enforcing this policy today, and will ramp up in the weeks to come. As always, news coverage and commentary on these issues can remain on our site if there’s sufficient education, documentary, scientific or artistic context.

Glad You Tube decided to crack down on the nutters. Whether it's grifters exploiting the orange worshippers' delusions or genuine conspiracy nuts, it's sickening to see so many self proclaimed patriots or 'fair and unbiased news outlets' still try to peddle more misinformation this far into the post-election period and undermine faith in America's political system.

Man, people who call themselves 'patriots' or 'fair and unbiased news sources' don't tend to be either of those things. It's similar how you can't truthfully call yourself humble- and you feel the need to call attention to it, it's probably not accurate.
Calling yourself either of those things would be a red flag for me right out of the gate.

What did you expect from someone whose career basically amounts to being a glory hound Snake Oil Salesman?

The Trumpanzees aren't taking the SCOTUS rejection very well. Many of them are accusing Trump's own appointed judges, the entire American legal system as well as half Republican establishment who aren't acting like sore losers of being compromised by the deep state.
When do you think they'll accuse Trump himself of being part of the deep state? Because at this point, I'm confused whether Trump is owning himself to own the libs, or is owning the hardline Republican voter base to own the libs.
