Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Ivanka Trump, Jared Kushner buying $30M lot in Florida 'Billionaire's Bunker'
.
Saw this on Twiteer and don't have a news source for it, but Donald Trump walked out
in the middle of a medal of freedom ceremony.
On the First Lady discussion, it's certainly going to be interesting to see what Jill Biden will do in the White House. She's also a reluctant political spouse but the relative anonymity of Second Lady meant she actually held a teaching position at a Washington DC further education college. She insisted that her security detail act as if they were students and she was known for grading papers whilst flying on Air Force 2.
Can she do the same as First Lady? Almost certainly not, sadly. But having an actual teacher in the White House might mean that education gets the TLC it deserves, especially after four years of Betsy Devos.

The tears from Orange Grandpa must taste so extravagant for the war veterans he had mocked even before his candidacy.
Politico:
Biden will select Ohio Representative Marcia Fudge to lead the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
She's the second House member to be tapped for the Biden admin, which will temporarily put the Dem. majority at just 2 votes.
My homeland celebrates Christmas and is less then 1% christian.... going to back Charles here... "Christmas is a state multi-religious and nonreligious cultural holiday"
We dropped that topic specifically because it was determined to not fall within the scope of the thread.
The Supreme Court heard a request by Mike Kelly (R-PA) and other plaintiffs, asking them to invalidate Pennsylvania's presidential election results.
Their response in full.
ORDER IN PENDING CASE
20A98 - KELLY, MIKE, ET AL. V. PENNSYLVANIA, ET AL.
The application for injunctive relief presented to Justice Alito and by him referred to the Court is denied.
Thank god. Did Injustice Karen vote for the request or against it?
The shortness of the order might well indicate that it was unanimous, as I’d presume that if any disagreed they’d get to include a dissent in the order.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranAlito’s statement to the Federalist Society didn’t get into election stuff. All indicators are that that’s a bridge to far even for the current court. If it’s a bridge to far for ethical reasons, fuck-you-got-mine reasons or simply self-preservation reasons we can only guess, but they all seem very not interested in being on the frontline of a coup attempt.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranRoberts probably had a talk with him about a court's authority not being a law of nature and that stunts like these can easily lead to courts being dismissed as illegitimate.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanA Supreme Court Justice using their position to undermine American democracy could probably be grounds for impeachment, or potentially criminal charges.
Also making left-wing groups scared that the court will overturn the election has the potential of setting off radicalised elements who might try and take preemptive action to stop such a thing.
Again, frontline of a coup attempt, not a good place to be if you value your health.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranI mean, that's true for the lawsuit from Texas's AG (which strikes me as more a blatant attempt at self-preservation from Paxton, who as I've noted in the past is in dire legal trouble with his own party), but even if this had actually succeeded totally Biden still would have won with 286 EVs. And Alito has already, IMO, destroyed any pretension of being an impartial justice. So yeah, I'm still surprised.
Edit: Just found out that Paxton is facing a FBI investigation in addition to the state-level one, so yeah, he's hilariously blatantly trying to get a Trump pardon.

I don’t think any of the SC justices are worried about their personal safety. They’re invested in the reputation of the Court and well aware that blatant interference like this would deeply discredit it. And the conservative ones wouldn’t want to do anything so blatantly partisan - partisan, as distinct from ideological - as to give the Democrats a clear justification for court-packing.
They Supreme Court will be right-wing, but they won’t do things extreme or openly undemocratic enough to undermine their own legitimacy.

It was only 3 years ago that a congressional basketball game got shot up by a former political activist, 6 years before that congresswomen Gabby Giffords was shot in the head in an attempted assassination that claimed the lives of 6 others (she survived), including a federal district court judge.
I’m pretty sure all members of Congress and SC justices are worried about their personal safety, it’s a bloody dangerous job politics, over in the UK we once had someone attempt to assassinate an MP with a sword.

Biden will select Tom Vilsack, former Iowa Governor and Agriculture Secretary for the entirety of Obama's term, as his Ag. Sec.

I have no doubt Mr. Twitterfingers has secretly wanted death on those who don't give him a favorable view. I'm not sure if he has personally sent death threats to those he hates though. Personally I think he's too chicken to call for people to "disappear".
