The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

You know, I didn't know that Evil Turtle is on that committee...

The enthusiasm with which Republicans and the voters backing them are trying to subvert election results based on transparently bogus arguments is concerning. A Machiavellian "the end (i.e my preferred policies) justifies the means (i.e disregarding election outcomes)" approach to democracy is how you end up with tinpot dictatorships.

She's the QAnon supporting candidate that ran against Sen. Chris Coons this year. I'm gonna say facts aren't her strong suit.

I'd pay to see that map. I can't decide if it would be more or less hilariously nonsensical than the maps from The West Wing.

The Republicans not recognizing Joe Biden is deeply concerning.

I can somewhat sympathize with Melania hating Christmas when you consider that she lives in a sexist household, and is likely expected as a matter of course to be the one doing all the decorating and cooking and stuff.

Also, everyone vents frustrations in private from time to time, even when they don't really mean them. And for someone having to deal with Trump on a daily basis, in person, it is perfectly understandable that she needs to vent. If you think following his Twitter drives you crazy, try living with the guy.

And it's not entirely clear just how complicit she really is. There are definitely some mixed signals there, it seems. I wouldn't be surprised if she divorced him soon. And that she wanted to earlier explains why she burst into tears upon hearing about Trump being elected.

As mentioned before though even if it is suspect she may be forced, coerced, or otherwise, trapped, she has participated and profited more than enough that she is definitely complicit

I think that in a case like this it is really hard to determine what is or isn't complicit.

Can Biden just not recognize Republican senators in return? At this point, they're asking for it.

Given how they keep trying to subvert the constitution, sending some officers their way seems fairly appropriate.

I'd pay to see that map.

It’s not as bonkers as you’d expect. Give Trump every state he either won in 2016 or came within 10 points of winning, then give him California and you’ve got exactly 410 electoral votes.

give him California

That's pretty bonkers.

I'd tie the whole 'Fuck Christmas' into her overall lack of enthusiasm for the whole role of First Lady. As Mrs Trump she could just hire people if Donald wanted 'Christmas' or she could do what she likes. As the First Lady its her JOB to prep the White House for Christmas everybody looks to her for answers and to make the lord only knows how many decisions into decorating the building, there is also a strict timetable for the whole thing, the prep starts months earlier and the actual decorating take only a few weeks it a huge undertaking and the First Lady is at the center of it all.

Again not the role or the job she wanted at all and it shows.

[up]At that point, it may be more logically consistent for them to just claim he won all the electoral college votes.

[up][up] No, that's still pretty bonkers. Trump in 2016 claimed that there were three million illegal immigrants across the entire country that voted in the election.

Biden beat Trump in California by over five million votes. Even if every illegal ballot Trump claimed existed did, and every single one of them was in California, and they were all identified and thrown out, Biden would still crush Trump in a landslide in California. It should not be understated how incredibly many people live in California, and how incredibly very blue it is.

EDIT: In fact, Biden beat Trump in the popular vote this year by seven million votes. 72% of Biden's victory margin is California's margin. There are. A lot. Of Democrats. In California.

I can imagine that there have been more First Ladies who were less than thrilled at the job. It probably helped that the role was a lot less visible for a large part of history, if at all.

And I can definitely sympathize with that. They didn't run for office, after all. They often weren't even really asked if they wanted their husband to have that job. Even Obama ignored his wife when she initially told him she didn't want him to run. It's kind of an unfair position to be in for women.

Maybe I misunderstood what you're saying, but I don't see how her potentially divorcing him soon means anything either way to the question of her being complicit. Her disliking him or wanting to get out now that the situation looks worse for him doesn't exempt her from anything.

Well, in some "good" news, the US Army has relieved 14 officers of duty at Fort Hood in response to the killing of Spc. Vanessa Guillén pending a fuller investigation - if there aren't more punishments coming down the line, I'd be genuinely disheartened, but it shows they at least realize that shit does need to change.

Anyone wanna guess how Trump reacts next week when the votes in the electoral college get ratified. Do you think he'll wish certain members of the electoral college would "dissappear"? And ask his agents about doing that? I don't think it would be out of character for him.
