The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

A lot of incels don't care because they resent that women have rights in the fitst place. Don't underestimate people who will just say, "Sexual slavery is okay because I'm a man and don't care about what other people [let alone women] want."

They need to take some courses on marketing, or something, to work on how to sell their ideas. It's kind of their weak point.

[up][up]I think that Dems also need to make their key players, including Obama, Biden, Harris and AOC meme-able. From what I've seen, the key reason why Mister T. was so "popular" was because he was easy to make a meme out of (how the hell anyone would find him funny at all confounds me, his insults are never funny for a sane person, and his face and facial expressions are so ugly (funnily enough, I can look more comfortably at Alec Baldwin's impersonation of Trump not just because Baldwin is much more funny than the real man but also because he is much more handsome as well.)). I think with memes involving Biden and other Dems I think they would get more recognition.

One, "making" people memeable sounds like a non-starter. Need I remind you how "Pokemon Go to the polls" worked out? Two, making memes of someone doesn't guarantee that said memes won't be made to deride them. To that point, three, people are already memeing Biden. They're not all positive.

I'm not convinced about Obama's argument. Obama is an incredibly polished politician. No drama Obama. The Republicans had to invent a scandal to try and tar him, and the best they could do was the colour of his suit!

So to me, it makes sense that he's looking for the polished solution. It's just that politics doesn't work that way and if it did I think it would be alienating to the general public.

The problem with progressive politics such as policing reform and say the Green New Deal is that these things are being crafted in public. But the first draft is then being taken to be the final product. Now obviously the Republicans do so dishonestly to gain a political advantage but the media and others including democratic politicians need to get comfortable with the inherent ugliness that comes with making policy.

This is how the sausage gets made, sang the third VP of the United States. And an unmade sausage isn't very appealing. But if you know every ingredient that went into the sausage and saw the care and effort that went into stuffing it you'd be much more confident of its taste when it's served up on the plate.

NPR: Trump Administration Rushes To Sell Oil Rights In Arctic National Wildlife Refuge

Starting Tuesday, oil and gas companies can pick which parts of Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge they're interested in drilling. It's the latest push by the Trump administration to auction off development rights in the pristine landscape before President-elect Joe Biden takes office.

In a dramatic shift after nearly four decades of protections, a Republican-led Congress in 2017 approved legislation that opened up part of the refuge to oil development. It called for two lease sales in the coastal section of the Arctic refuge within seven years, with the first one to be held by the end of 2021.

But conservation groups are blasting the Trump administration's decision to push forward with the sale now, about two months before Inauguration Day, saying it's rushing the process "to open one of the nation's most iconic and sacred landscapes to oil drilling."

The Arctic refuge's coastal plain is about 1.6 million acres — an area roughly the size of Delaware that makes up about 8% of the vast refuge. It's a place where caribou migrate, polar bears den and migratory birds feed. It's also an area believed to hold billions of barrels of untapped oil.

[up]Hahaha. I doubt he would follow through given that he would want to continue furthering his Orange Sensei's agendas of ending the Democratic party.

Barr doesn't actually care about Trump. Barr cares about the party. Lame duck Trump can only advance the party's agenda so far so why bother sticking around.

I think Barr was very loyal to Trump until he got Covid-19, protestors called for his death, and Barr was ordered to arrest Biden and Obama—which had the not 0% chance of getting him killed.

Barr was loyal to Trump until Trump lost. At that moment he was a lost cause to Barr, and he knows the Democrat are out for metaphorical blood. People will be arrested, people will be indicted, people will be going to jail over the things they did the past few years, Barr included if he tries to pull anything. I'm pretty sure the people underneath Barr have already been waiting for this moment to get rid of him.

Realize that Republican loyalty is fickle. There is no such thing as genuine loyalty among Republicans. They're loyal to the hierarchy (and then, only when they view it as legitimate).

The only person in this entire ordeal that was ever loyal to Donald Trump personally was former attorney and fixer Michael Cohen, and even that only lasted until his willingness to take a bullet for Trump was actually put to the test. Everyone in Washington? Was loyal to The Republican President. They knew their place in the hierarchy and fell in line to enrich themselves, except when asked to endanger themselves.

Trump's fifteen minutes of political fame are rapidly approaching their conclusion. In about a month, Trump isn't going to be Top Dog of the Republican Hierarchy anymore. The Republicans in his administration are going to be looking for new jobs soon, the Republicans in Congress are going to move forward without him, and Trump himself will be consigned to the annals of presidential history.

So far as every Republican right now is concerned, Trump is of no further use. And, if anything, is proving to actively be a detriment to what really matters: winning the Georgia runoff. So why would anyone expect loyalty towards him now?

Atlanta Journal-Constitution: At Georgia rally, Trump tells GOP to vote in 'rigged' election

Republican strategists in Georgia have long believed that their best message heading into the runoffs would be the so-called "firewall" a Republican Senate would be against a Biden administration and Democratic House of Representatives.

Trump followed that line of reasoning, to a point. "Without these two, there's going to be nothing to stop (the Democrats). You have no idea how bad it will be," Trump said.

"This election was rigged, and we can't let it happen to two of the most respected people in Washington," Trump said. "Your governor could stop it easily if he knew what the hell he was doing."

Trump urged the crowd to vote in January, even though that election, he said, is likely to be corrupt, too.

From the rest of the article, it sounds like Trump was mostly repeating talking points he'd gotten from someone else - the rest of the speech focused on his grievances, especially against Gov. Kemp, and how the election was stolen.

The Trump administration, up until its final days, continues to find new ways to hurt immigrants. Politico: Trump's New Citizenship Test Is Full of Conservative Bias—And Dotted With Mistakes

On December 1, 2020, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service began administering a new naturalization test to those hoping to become U.S. citizens. The test draws from 128 potential civics questions, with the approved answers posted on the USCIS website. The test is given orally, and all applicants for naturalization will have to answer 20 of those questions chosen at random, with a passing score of 12.

When the test was first released a few weeks ago, many critics focused on its needless difficulty and complexity. The previous iteration of the test, last revised in 2008, required applicants to answer six of 10 questions, drawn from a pool of only 100. Several new questions call for biographical details about Alexander Hamilton, James Madison and Dwight Eisenhower, while another asks for "the purpose of the 10th Amendment." Critics of the new test believe that it is intended to create an additional and unnecessary barrier to naturalization.

But perhaps the most significant feature of the test is its decidedly conservative political tilt, sometimes to the point of inaccuracy.

The article goes on to give multiple examples of bias and inaccuracy, including this one:

65. What are three rights of everyone living in the United States?

• Freedom of expression • Freedom of speech • Freedom of assembly • Freedom to petition the government • Freedom of religion • The right to bear arms

Notably missing from the UCSIS answer list are the rights to counsel, due process, equal protection, and freedom from cruel and unusual punishment or unreasonable search and seizure
